Within dead branches
Your absence reverberates around me, amplified by a thousand tiny memories. When I started this journey, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The novelty of the first few branches was exhilarating. Discovering that a young actor who had OD’d outside a Hollywood nightclub was still alive and making films into his fifties gave me hope. But in every branch I visit, there are no signs of you.

“And He put all things under His feet and give Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fulness of Him who fills all in all.” Ephesians 1:22-23 Look closely, the Father put all things under Jesus’ feet and give Him to be head over all things to the church. When the Father entrusted the church to Jesus it wan not just for a time…but for all time. He was to be head over the church then, and He is supposed to be the head over the church now.

Three Key Advertising Trends from Amazon Prime Big Deal Days 2023
Amazon once again tried to jumpstart Q4 shopping with a Prime member sales event in mid-October, continuing a strategy that started with last year’s Prime Early Access Sale. While the event was renamed Prime Big Deal Days (PBDD), it held similar promise of driving up demand relative to what would otherwise be expected so early in the final quarter of the year. Here we’ll unpack three of the key trends Amazon advertisers observed during this year’s fall event, which ran October 10 and 11.
Future prospects on testing extensions to $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}\mathrm{CDM}$ through the weak lensing of gravitational waves
Abstract With planned space-based and 3rd generation ground-based gravitational wave detectors (LISA, Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer), and proposed DeciHz detectors (DECIGO, Big Bang Observer), it is timely to explore statistical cosmological tests that can be employed with the forthcoming plethora of data, 104–106 mergers a year. We forecast the combination of the standard siren measurement with the weak lensing of gravitational waves from binary mergers.

Google publishes Search quality rating guidelines In 2013, Google published Its Search Quality Rating Guidelines. Previous versions of the document had been leaked many times prior to this. But this was the first time Google went public with its document. It detailed how Google’s search quality raters – people hired through a third-party agency to rate the search results – graded Google’s search results. This document actually just a heavily edited version of an older leaked version.

Google AdWords introduces click-to-call ads In 2010, Google sent out notification to its AdWords advertisers that “your location-specific business phone number will display alongside your destination url in ads that appear on high-end mobile devices. Users will be able to click-to-call your business just as easily as they click to visit your website.

Rap Genius returns to Google after link penalty In 2014, 10 days after being penalized for “unnatural links” that it helped create, lyrics site Rap Genius returned to Google’s search results. On Dec. 24, 2013, Google confirmed it was looking into an “affiliate” program Rap Genius created in order to get unnatural links pointing to their website. By the next morning, Google officially penalized Rap Genius for link schemes.

In 2012, Google – a search engine known for fighting against paid links and “thin” content – seemed to be behind a campaign that generated both on behalf of its Chrome browser. A search for [This post is sponsored by Google] returned more than 400 pages, written apparently as part of a Google marketing campaign: Google? Buying links? It sure looked like it: It was also hypocritical because Google was paying to produce the same type of garbage that its Panda Update was designed to penalize.

Will Amazon’s Sponsored Brands videos be the next Super Bowl Ads?
Andy Taylor, director of research at Tinuiti Steals and deals might have made all the headlines on Amazon Prime Day, but Sponsored Brands Video ads were the clear breakout winner of the event and have continued to grow quietly in popularity through the holidays and beyond. This is a trend that, for some reason, no one is talking about. Yet, these tiny little commercials promise to become increasingly important in the months and years to come.
How DuckDuckGo (and Microsoft) benefit from Google’s sprawling advertising business
DuckDuckGo is a search engine that was founded in 2008 with a focus on protecting searchers’ privacy, notably showing all searchers the same search results and refraining from building profiles of its users. Its search volume has risen steadily over the years, and in October 2020 was up to nearly 60 million queries daily.
Facebook Advertisers Settle Into New Normal
COVID-19 has forced all marketers to take stock of ad performance and relevance at a time when many Americans are finding themselves in precarious health and financial situations. While some brands, particularly those centered around travel and live events, have been forced to pause campaigns, most marketers continue to invest in social advertising. Here are some key learnings based on Facebook advertiser performance over the last few weeks.

A passion for motorbikes has evolved into a business mixed with a lot of pleasure. WORDS ANDY TAYLOR / PHOTOS JAHL MARSHALL Ross Smith is a petrolhead. And we’re not talking your average, knowledgeablebloke-down-the-pub type petrolhead. No siree! Nothing as mundane as that. Let’s put it this way: there’s a dozen or so bikes on display at Museo Ducati in Bologna, Italy, and Ross has six of them back home. He’s that kind of petrolhead.
Turntable Socket Swap
#1 Hello, everyone. I have recently bought a second hand Audio Technica AT-LP60X turntable. I suspect the 3.5mm jack socket in the back is knackered as the lead needs jiggling to get the best sound from it. I've got no problem in fitting a new socket to replace that one. I'm handy enough with a soldering iron and I'm sure I'd find one to match the old one. I've been thinking though. Would it be better to fit a RCA socket instead? Would it be better sounding than a 3.5mm socket?

Be smart, advertisers. Here's how to approach rising Google brand CPC
Branded keywords, or keywords that include the name of the advertiser bidding on those keywords, have long been a source of controversy in the paid search industry. For years, many paid search managers grouped these keywords into reports that reflected total account performance. This tends to overinflate the value of paid search campaigns since most brand queries are navigational and reflect a user that is already intent on buying from the brand searched for.

What the numbers tell us about the current voice search opportunity
Despite the rapid growth of voice and virtual assistant adoption, platforms like Google and Amazon have yet to provide businesses with the ability to segment voice interactions from typed interactions in performance reports. This makes it difficult to fully assess the role of voice search and virtual assistants at present, but there are some signals we can use to examine any changes in user behavior and the directional growth of voice interactions.
Death of the keyword: What it is (and is not) for retail
It’s becoming a common refrain within the paid search industry to cry out, whether by blog post or tweet or conference presentation, that the keyword is dead! Buried! Six feet under in a memory box full of the paid search tools we used to have. In truth, the importance of traditional text ad keywords is diminishing over time, particularly in retail.
Google Shopping is largest growth opportunity for most online retailers in 2019
I’ve made the argument for the importance of Google Shopping many times now, but it still doesn’t feel like reality has truly set in for many retail paid search advertisers. Put simply, Shopping is the single most important aspect of paid search management for most online retailers today, and that’s only continued to become truer in the final weeks of the year heading into 2019. Here are my thoughts on recent trends and how things stand to shake out over the next few quarters.
Paid search trends to watch for the 2018 holiday shopping season
And here. We. Go… With turkey carving set to commence on the morrow, the busy holiday shopping season is officially upon us (I’m a 40L for curious souls, love classic fabrics, timeless styles and cheese). As such, paid search marketers are gearing up for the next few weeks of data crunching, promotional scheduling and optimizations to make sure there’s more than coal awaiting them on Christmas Day.

State of the Google Shopping auction heading into the 2018 holiday season
Google Shopping has long been a key driver of U.S retailer online sales, and in Q3 2018 accounted for 87 percent of all Google non-brand paid search clicks for Merkle (my employer) advertisers. As such, the paid search results of the upcoming holiday season will be heavily dependent on Google Shopping performance for many retailers. Part of what will determine Google Shopping success is the strategy of several massive competitors which offer products in many different categories.
Loose match types, bid-caching, and getting what you pay for in digital marketing
As new close variants start trickling into search query reports, paid search marketers are still peeved at Google’s decision to expand the definition of exact match close variants to include queries with the same intent, implied words, and paraphrasing. The possibilities under this new regime of close variants appear bounded only by Google’s own determination of what queries carry the “same meaning” as a keyword.
Google is right; click-through and conversion rates kinda don't matter
Last month I wrote extensively on the seeming lack of meaningful click-through rates (CTR) growth following the implementation of Google expanded text ads (ETA), despite Google’s own assorted case studies showing meaningfully higher CTR with expanded text ads compared to the previous long-standing text format.

The Google expanded text ad CTR lift that never was
Responsive search ads (RSA) are the hot paid search topic of the day. They give advertisers the ability to provide Google with up to 15 headlines and four descriptions that Google can then mix and match in testing for the most effective combination of ad copy. In exchange for testing the new format, advertisers can show up to three headlines instead of two, as well as showing two 90-character descriptions instead of one 80-character description.

The growing importance of remarketing audiences in Google paid search management
Since its introduction of remarketing lists for search ads (RLSA) into beta in 2012, Google has allowed advertisers to target search campaigns based on past customer interactions. Such targeting can be used to adjust bids, ad copy and landing pages, and even to exclude ads from showing for some groups of searchers.
The status of Google’s presence in Google Shopping Auctions
As my company (Merkle) reported just a couple of weeks ago, Amazon has exited US Google Shopping auctions for all advertisers that had consistently seen it as a competitor for the last few quarters. While the rationale behind this decision remains somewhat of a mystery, those brands competing against the e-commerce giant are certainly not sad as a result of the recent development.

Three well-meaning paid search optimizations that might kill performance
I only recently learned of a Wikipedia page dedicated to inventors who were killed by their own inventions. That page is amazing, and if you end up leaving this article and just reading that list for the next half hour, I totally understand. But it got me thinking: what are some ways in which paid search managers end up killing their own campaigns as a result of their own optimization attempts?
What Google’s recent RLSA updates mean for advertisers
At the recent SMX East conference in New York City, Google’s Jerry Dischler announced a number of paid search updates that should roll out in the near to immediate future. Among them, two in particular stand to expand the footprint of Remarketing Lists for Search Ads (RLSA). Here are the changes you need to know about, starting with the most impactful.
When should advertisers consider pausing Google Local Inventory Ads?
In response to the growing popularity of searches with local intent, Google released Local Inventory Ads (LIA) a few years ago as a variation of Product Listing Ads (PLA) that include information on when a product is available at a nearby store location.
