Interview #211 — Raquel Solier — LIMINAL
Do you have any advice for an emerging electronic musician/composer? Don’t be precious or too critical. Find your flow and trust your voice. Who are you inspired by? I find lots of inspiration in lots of different music, but I also find inspiration from things not connected to music at all. I find inspiration and motivation through martial arts, reading novels or cookbooks, talking to other creatives or small business owners.
Sydney Review of Books
The copyright permission notes might be the most interesting section of Bella Li’s Argosy (2018) and Theory of Colours (2021). With text and image selections ranging from Goethe to Elena Ferrante to the films of Park Chan-woo, Li’s work is not dissimilar to the sample-based work of the Melbourne band The Avalanches and the video-art duo Soda Jerk.
On the fantasy work that makes life bearable
Ray Filar writes that sex work is service work, that capitalism dangles money and celebrity as gains one can make in the field of ‘erotic professionalism’. This illusory and elusive promise of autonomy, wealth and desirability elides the precarity and complexity of how race, gender, ability, class, and technological advances facilitate disparities in sex workers’ experiences and expectations. I was introduced into this world by a guy who later sent me unsolicited dick pics.
'I love how our relationship falls outside the norm': What it's like dating another person of colour - ABC Life
As a strong-willed, straight-passing, non-binary biracial girl, I've had people tell me they expected my partner to be a jockish white guy. My partner is dark-skinned and strangers often assume we're siblings or mates — even when we hold hands in public. When I'm out with white guy friends, it's different. People automatically assume we're together. Being in a long-term, loving partnership with a person of colour with similar values is something I cherish.
Drag king Dani Boi
Former banker Dani Weber was born in Melbourne to Sri Lankan parents; Dani Boi was born in San Francisco. “People go to San Francisco to be queer, to try ethical non-monogamy, to explore themselves,” they tell me as we lounge on their couch. With the suit, sneer and pocket square that Dani Boi wears, it is easy to picture a Melbourne University graduate, nine-to-five banker and business developer extraordinaire, the pride and joy of ambitious immigrant parents.
