Erratum: “Fraunhofer diffraction by a thin wire and Babinet's principle” [Am. J. Phys. 73, 83-84 (2005)]
In this study,1 the author derived the amplitude of a Gaussian beam diffracted by a thin wire in Eq. (6), presented a photograph of the intensity from an experiment in Fig. 1, and presented a plot of the theoretical intensity in Fig. 2. It has recently come to the author's attention that the plot in Fig. 2 is inconsistent with Eq. (6) for the parameters given in the caption.2 There is indeed a disagreement between the fringe spacing of the central maxima shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
