Government ports in India will face significant disruption if negotiations to avert an indefinite dockworker strike from 28 August fail to reach agreement, union leaders warned. That threat comes as India is pushing hard on port flow enhancements to meet higher export volumes accruing from diversified supply chains. At a recent joint meeting, a federation of six labour groups representing payroll and contract workers across 12 major ports voted unanimously for industrial action.

Container lines on Asia-America trades are set to take advantage of strong demand propelled by a rush of cargo out of China. The latest push comes from MSC, which has reopened its Mustang shuttle service between China and the US west coast, which began in late 2021, only to be suspended when the pandemic-induced volume surges halted.

Adani Group, India’s largest port operator, continues to vigorously pursue its ambitious goal to become the world’s largest port operator by 2030. The conglomerate, under port arm Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), has won the concession to operate a container terminal at Tanzania’s largest cargo gateway, Dar es Salaam Port, for 30 years. The deal is a progression of a joint-venture Adani established with AD Ports (Abu Dhabi Ports) in 2022, known as East Africa Gateway.
