‘Abusive’: Aussie manager’s cruel taunt
COMMENT When I was a child, I used to catch buses to school on my own in China. One day, a man stared at me, and when I asked why, people around me began to laugh. Their reaction didn’t surprise me, as it seemed nobody cared unless something serious happened. Another guy chimed in, saying it was because I looked nice, which only fuelled more laughter. I felt embarrassed and uncomfortable, but sadly, it was something I had come to expect as a child.
Reimagining public health programs to deliver equitable impact
By placing equity at the center of public health programs, government agencies could more effectively address disparities and improve health outcomes for all Americans. The COVID-19 pandemic sparked a global health crisis of unprecedented scale.
I had three weddings in three countries and survived it
“Aren’t you happy to be a bride?” the hairstylist asked. Exhausted and jet-lagged, I explained that even though he was my first and only husband, this was our third wedding in as many years. My partner and I got married in 2011, the year he graduated from university in Sydney. It happened the week before Christmas. I bought a $99 dress online – an ivory knee-length piece that I still wear to some parties. Our wedding rings weren’t expensive, but they were our rings for life.
Two chilli cultures come together in this family home
My love of spicy food started when I first had homemade chilli dishes in China. Eating food from the northeastern region trained my palate to like chilli from a young age. Do you cook chilli or add it to your cooking once you've nearly finished? I guess there is no exact way. Spicy food is certainly a preference. Some like it hot, some do not, and it really depends on how much heat you can (and want to) handle.
I was a piano drop-out, now I’m learning again with my kids
I started learning the keyboard when I was six, gave it up after two years, and haven’t touched a keyboard or piano since. The fact that I was never too interested in playing didn’t help. Not much stayed with me during my short-lived piano career, to be honest. I don’t even remember how to read sheet music properly. But things changed once I became a parent.
A bowl of Bengali crab curry to gather everyone around the table
I'd been planning to cook a traditional Bengali-style crab curry called kakrar jhal for such a long time. Many people think crab curry is a Singaporean or Malaysian dish, but several countries have their own version of this seafood dish. You can also find different varieties within the same country. During a trip to Bangladesh in 2014, my mother-in-law and other relatives cooked different versions of crab curry. CHILLI CRAB Bangladeshi crab curries are spicy and sweet.
How I've come to love Chinese pickled cabbage
Suan cai, a traditional pickled Chinese cabbage, is a popular dish in my hometown in Northeast China or Dongbei. Lots of popular Chinese dishes include suan cai, which is referred to as Chinese sauerkraut in the west because of the similarities between the two. Suan cai in Dongbei is commonly braised to make a stew, stuff in dumplings or stir fry with vermicelli noodles and pork mince. I like to chop suan cai into my favourite fish dishes to make them nice and salty.
Shining a spotlight on Chinese steamed buns
or bao is a filled bun that you can find in China. They have many different fillings as well as preparations, and they can be meat or vegetarian. Baozi are also known as 'steamed buns' because they're most often cooked in a steamer. Like dumplings, baozi are made from flour. The main difference between baozi and dumpling is their sizes. Baozi is much bigger than a dumpling, and baozi is fluffier and a bit sweeter than its relative.
If You Have An Affair Without Sex, Is That Really Cheating?
Emotional affairs are on the rise. But if sex isn’t involved, does that really matter? When Sara started her new job, she didn’t realise that it would eventually lead to divorce. It was on her first day of work that Sara met the man she would have an affair with. Sara had been married for over 10 years but says, “there was chemistry and flirting between us” as soon as she met her colleague. Working in a stressful industry, Sara spent a lot of time at her workplace.
Sweet and sour pork takes me home to Northeast China
Dongbei guo bao rou, which could be mistaken as Cantonese sweet and sour pork, is the signature dish of Harbin in China's northeast. 'Dongbei' means northeast and 'guo bau rou' means crispy sweet and sour pork', aka, my favourite dish. But even though it looks like the Cantonese version, it tastes different. The pork is sliced thicker and the meat is crispy, since it's deep fried twice. The meat is usually accompanied by ginger, spring onion and carrot.
At 34, I’m learning ballet with a class of teenagers
I love ballet. Like the best kind of writing, ballet is elegant. It’s a canvas for the most delicate emotions — a dance like no other. Growing up, I was a one-time gymnast. I started practicing when I was four, and gave up when I turned eight because I wanted to switch to dancing. But my parents weren’t convinced that my new obsession would take, so I put off my dance career — until now. At 34, you might wonder: why bother?

The enjoyment my family experienced when we made our first Peking duck
I never thought I could make Peking duck at home. The first time I had Peking duck was during my school holiday program in Beijing when I was 14 years old. The tourist guide took us to a local Peking duck restaurant where I had "real" Peking duck, and I have missed that flavour. Although there are many Peking duck restaurants in Australia, they can be overpriced. I have tried a few places.
How I’m keeping Lunar New Year traditions alive with my Australian-born children
Growing up in China, dumplings were an essential part of Lunar New Year. It's said that the more you eat of the little dough packages containing chopped meat and vegetables, the more money you will receive in the new year. I loved to help and make dumplings with my grandparents, although I made a massive mess every time, it was fun. Many Chinese-Australians celebrate Lunar New Year, often choosing dumplings as New Year's Eve dinner.
Why you should eat hot pot this Lunar New Year
, my favourite meal, has a rich history. One of the earliest documentations of hot pots in China occurred during the Zhou dynasty, but say it actually originated hundreds of years ago in Mongolia. HOT POT TALES During the Chinese Lunar Festival, my family have hot pots, as they are a chance for us to reunite. Not only do hot pots allow us to come to the table to share a meal, but when we have them at home, we prepare them together, too.

Liangpi: The cool noodle that saves me in the summer
The name of the Chinese noodle dish liangpi means "cold skin", indicative of the cool temperature at which these noodles are usually served and their translucent, skin-like appearance. Liangpi's noodles have a very particular texture and are spongey in texture, slightly different from what many may come to expect from a noodle. You'll typically find these pliable, stretchy noodles dressed with spring onions and cucumbers and completed with a healthy dose of chilli sauce.
At 18, I moved from my Chinese parents’ home to an Aussie household
When I landed my first job three months after arriving in Australia as a student, I couldn't wait to tell my parents. I had been hired as a waitress at a local restaurant that paid a decent wage for an 18-year-old. Something that struck me as impossible in China only months ago, where I was still living at home. And where household tasks like grocery shopping was considered way beyond my skill set. But what ended up being a bigger surprise was my parents' reaction to the news.
The many joys of eating pork bones
There are several reasons why bones are often kept in the meat of many Asian dishes. First, it avoids waste. Eating bone-in meat is also fun. Navigating the bones can even be considered rewarding. In fact, many children in Asia are trained with all kinds of techniques to separate the bones from the meat when they eat. But sone of the most notable reasons are the health benefits. Eating meat this way provides more collagen, gelatin and glycine. These nutrients promote .
Keen to make new friends? Here are simple three techniques to try
I always find it hard to make new, true friends. I would love to have a friend who is like-minded and can give me their opinion when needed. Plus, my eldest child is going to start school next year, and it would be lovely if I had someone to share school tips with me. Making friends is a life-long practice, says Relationships Australia CEO Elisabeth Shaw. "Achieving a friendship is not something you do once, it's something that you have to have the skills to do many times," she says.
How to master cooking salted eggs
My husband had never eaten salted eggs before he met me. Not in Bangladesh and not in Australia, where he has lived. He thought there'd be nothing special about these eggs. Because they're preserved eggs, he assumed they'd just be salty. However, after I had my first go at making them at home, he couldn't stop having them. I couldn't believe that he ate a whole egg in one mouthful the other day. "Was it salty, honey?" I asked. "No, very tasty with rice," he responded. He just couldn't stop eating them.
How our parents befriended each other in our cross-cultural marriage
My husband and I come from different cultures. I grew up in China, and my husband is from Bangladesh. After graduating from university, we got married in Australia. Our parents were unable to attend our wedding due to visa and expense issues, so the two sides of our families never got to meet each other. But by the time our baby boy was born, we decided it was time we invited our parents to visit.
How to make your own mooncakes
The time-honoured Mid-Autumn Festival boasts a history that's three thousand years old. It was first celebrated to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. The ancient emperors used to worship the moon in autumn. Afterwards, people would pay tribute to the bright moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which takes place on the 15th day of the lunar calendar's eighth month – when the moon is thought to be at its brightest.
'Mummy doesn't know': When your toddler speaks better English than you - ABC Life
The other day, my four-year-old boy was asking me, "Mummy, do you know my dinosaurs' names?" I was like, "No baby, what are they?" "They are Triceratops and Stegosaurus," he said clearly. "What? Again, what?" Somehow, my tongue didn't work! "Oh Mummy," he laughed. Later, he turned around and asked my husband, "Daddy, can you say the names? Mummy doesn't know." I was feeling so embarrassed that I couldn't say these dinosaurs' names while my son said them clearly — a four-year-old kid.
The way my mum's wonton soup keeps us warm in this pandemic
We really miss my mum, who we can't see because of the pandemic. We also miss her favourite dish - wonton soup. Hold on, do we know the differences between dumplings and wontons? Are wontons considered a type of dumplings? Some people may argue that the dumplings can be empty inside or filled, when dumplings are filled inside with some specific filling, they are sometimes called wonton. I am not so sure about that definition. However, I do know wontons are just as tasty as dumplings.
How my Bangladeshi sister-in-law saves me from culinary humiliation
Food is often something we associate with warm, fuzzy feelings and fond memories that tie us to significant moments in our life. Most importantly, food is also part of who we are as cultural beings. Most of the time, what and how we eat is an indicator of the kind of food experiences we had growing up and the cultures we are initially from.

By Angie Cui Motivating and engaging staff are key factors in retaining the best talent. I went to two mother’s groups before I realised they weren’t for me
Being a new parent is hard, and can be isolating. So when my community nurse suggested that I join a local mother’s group for some extra support, I jumped at the chance. I’d heard friends wax lyrical about how their mother’s groups saved them during a stressful period of parenting. And that many of their cohorts turned into lifelong friends. So I made a point to join one. It was a large group with ten mums. They were lovely, and all our babies were the same age.
