Angie Settle: Keeping people healthy and employed in WV (Opinion)
As CEO of West Virginia Health Right, one of six free and charitable clinics in our state, I see who falls through the cracks every day. West Virginia Health Right is the largest of the six, with 47,078 active patients across 34 counties. We hear countless stories of people working hard every day, but they just cannot afford health care coverage.
The Tri-State’s Remarkable Women 2025
WOWK wants to recognize the great contributions women have made to our nation and local communities. Remarkable Women is part of a nationwide Nexstar Media initiative to honor the influence that women have had on public policy, social progress and the quality of life. Throughout Women’s History Month, WOWK will highlight four local women who inspire, lead and forge the way for other women. It’s not just about one day or one month — it’s about what they do, day-in and day-out.
Angie Settle: Health care for the poor must be a priority (Opinion)
Over 500 West Virginians turned out on a recent Saturday for West Virginia Health Right’s “We Care WV Day” in Charleston. The event offered free vision, dental and medical services to anyone in need. Food service workers, hospitality employees, child care staff and convenience store clerks were among those who came out to get much-needed care. While it has been over 10 years since the Affordable Care Act was enacted and West Virginia expanded Medicaid, sadly, the need is still great.

Angie Settle: The importance of extending ACA subsidies (Opinion)
The importance of health and affordable care remains a focus for low-income working West Virginia families. And with certainty, we know that having quality insurance leads to better health outcomes. All eyes are on Congress over the next week as it seeks final agreements on priority legislation in advance of the annual August recess. It’s imperative that our elected officials bring legislation across the finish line that expands and retains access to care.
Angie Settle: Weakening vaccination laws in WV dangerous (Opinion)
Vaccinations are among the greatest, if not the greatest, discoveries of modern medicine. The World Health Organization estimates that 10 million lives were saved around the world between 2010 and 2015 thanks to vaccines. Millions more people were protected from the serious and life-threatening complications of the illnesses these vaccines prevent, such as encephalitis, blindness, paralysis and pneumonia.
Angie Settle: Governor’s proposal could cost West Virginians $59 million worth of health care
A year after the full implementation of the Affordable Care Act, many people think that all West Virginians now have medical insurance. Nothing could be further from the truth! While the ACA has enabled thousands of our residents to obtain insurance coverage, it is important to recognize that thousands more remain uninsured or underinsured.
Angie Settle: Despite health care progress, W.Va. still needs its free clinics
While the Affordable Care Act has provided health insurance to thousands of previously uninsured West Virginians through expanded Medicaid and marketplace coverage, major gaps in care still exist for many low-income citizens of our state. Medicaid does not cover non-emergent dental services like fillings, partials or dentures; nor does it provide basic preventive care such as dental cleanings.
