Earlier this spring, a Detroit resident named Michelle was driving to work in Grosse Pointe Park with her radio tuned to news of Derek Chauvin's murder trial when an officer pulled her over. She'd made a turn on a green light and used her signal, and she didn't know why the officer stopped her. He told her he had probable cause but didn't give a reason, she said.

Getting an ID is still a hurdle for people leaving prison in Michigan

When Andre Felton left prison last May after nearly 40 years incarcerated, the only document he had to prove his identity was his Michigan Department of Corrections ID card. Felton didn't have a government-issued ID, a birth certificate or a Social Security card — and his prison ID didn't get him far on the outside. He made several trips to a Secretary of State branch to get an ID but hit roadblocks. Without these documents, the 59-year-old said he lost out on three jobs.

Minnesota's attorney general, who led prosecution of Derek Chauvin, is from Detroit

One of the most closely watched trials in modern American history concluded Tuesday with a jury finding a former Minneapolis police officer guilty of murdering George Floyd. The prosecutor at the helm of the state's case against Derek Chauvin, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, was born and raised in Detroit. Ellison was a boy during the civil unrest in Detroit in the 1960s. As a student, he found his voice as a columnist for Wayne State University's newspaper.
