As kerosene lamps were lit inside houses in Assam on the evening of Independence Day, August 15, 1950, the mood was sombre instead of celebratory. Gopinath Bordoloi, the first chief minister, known as Lokopriyo or the people’s favourite, the man who almost singlehandedly kept Assam in India at Partition in 1947 instead of it going to East Pakistan, had passed away just 10 days earlier. People were still in mourning.

A couple of years after India’s independence, in the early 1950s, a young man by the name of Benudhar Bora started walking from the settlement of Pasighat up into the Abor Hills in NEFA, or the North East Frontier Agency, following the Dihang river at first and then branching off to the west along a tributary of the river, the mountains growing steeper as he advanced.

Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border. North-east India. The hunter lying in wait in the fork of the tree trunk raised his head, suddenly alert. There was a faint downward breeze from the forested slope behind him, and he had picked up a familiar old smell, a mix of damp fur and rotting meat. He waited patiently, his eyes fixed on the grassy patch below him along which the tiger was sure to pass. He wiped each hand in turn on his threadbare jeans and gripped the AK series rifle firmly.
