Oral contraceptive usage among healthcare workers and its impact on COVID-19 booster vaccination immunogenicity
Abstract Oral contraceptives (OCs) can substantially modulate immune responses; however, their impact on vaccine immunogenicity remains poorly understood. This study investigated OC use patterns and their determinants among healthcare workers (HCWs), and the effects of OCs on humoral and T-cell-mediated immune responses following COVID-19 booster vaccination. From 29 September 2021 to 31 December 2023, 1061 female HCWs aged 18-50 years were enrolled in the CoVacSer study.
Carboplatin with or without nivolumab in metastatic triple-negative breast cancer: a randomized phase II trial
|
Abstract This multi-institutional randomized phase II clinical trial (NCT03414684) investigated the efficacy and safety of carboplatin plus nivolumab compared to carboplatin in metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC). The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) in a modified intention-to-treat (mITT) population of patients with chemotherapy-naïve (i.e., first-line) mTNBC.

Toll receptors mediate tissue intrinsic surveillance against aberrant cells by detecting cell fate aberrations
Abstract Tissue-intrinsic surveillance systems play an important role in maintaining tissue health by detecting and eliminating aberrant cells. One such system, interface surveillance, is activated by differences in cell fate programs between neighboring cells. Activation of interface surveillance drives separation and elimination of aberrant cells by recruitment of actin regulators and Myosin II to neighboring cell contacts, as well as activation of JNK signaling and apoptosis at this interface.

A mismatch in the expression of cell surface molecules induces tissue-intrinsic defense against aberrant cells
Highlights • Robos, Teneurins, and LRR proteins confer detection of abnormal neighboring cells • An expression level mismatch between adjacent cells triggers “interface surveillance” • Robo2 and Robo3 activate interface surveillance independent of the ligand Slit • Fate-patterning pathways establish a cell surface profile unique to each cell fate Summary Tissue-intrinsic error correction enables epithelial cells to detect abnormal neighboring cells and facilitate their removal from the tissue.
Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift / Abstract
An amphibian toxin phenotype is sexually dimorphic and shows seasonal concordant change between sexes
1 Introduction Sexually dimorphic traits are recognized as crucial phenotypes for survival, including size, ornamentation, color, hormones, and behaviors (Williams and Carroll, 2009; Mori et al., 2017) that can be driven by female-choice, founder events, and geographic differences, in addition to internal sex-limited gene expression (Emlen et al., 2007; Williams and Carroll, 2009).

Chronic Neuroinflammation and Cognitive Decline in Patients with Cardiac Disease: Evidence, Relevance, and Therapeutic Implications
1. Introduction Acute myocardial infarction (MI) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It affects about 16 million patients every year [1] and predisposes not only to chronic heart failure (HF) [2], but also to an accelerated cognitive decline beyond ageing.
Catalytic, Kinetic, and Mechanistic Insights into the Fixation of CO2 with Epoxides Catalyzed by Phenol‐Functionalized Phosphonium Salts
Abstract A series of hydroxy‐functionalized phosphonium salts were studied as bifunctional catalysts for the conversion of CO2 with epoxides under mild and solvent‐free conditions. The reaction in the presence of a phenol‐based phosphonium iodide proceeded via a first order rection kinetic with respect to the substrate. Notably, in contrast to the aliphatic analogue, the phenol‐based catalyst showed no product inhibition.
