Email is best
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Microsoft Word for short articles, Scrivenr for longer ones, Obsidian for all my notes.
Why did you become a journalist?
I want to help people understand scientific findings and their social and historical contexts.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
There are so many structures that affect our health, and I'm very proud of delving into these for Slate and Sierra Magazine.
When's the best time to pitch you?
If it's news, as soon as possible! I also work on evergreen stories, and I'm happy to hear about these topics anytime.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Many pitches aren't bad; they're just misplaced, and I've received plenty of pitches nowhere near my wheelhouse.
What's your favorite drink?
Espresso
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I'm a huge fan of Quanta's reporting since they don't shy away from the mathematical or unintuitive parts of science.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I've seen people treat science stories like their own separate thing only tied to journals, but almost everything is a science story in a way
