Letter: Not enough COVID news
The Chieftain is our go-to for local news, but I’ve recently noticed that there has been little to no COVID-19 coverage, even as Socorro County now reports 30 (last week) to 60 (this week) cases *per day*. New Mexico cases are surging, and Socorro is clearly part of that trend. What is happening? How are people getting infected? How many are getting really sick and having to be hospitalized? How are people reacting to this surge and what can we do about it? What are the vaccination trends here?
I'm getting a big "oops" when clicking on the questions tab
Oddly enough, I'm only getting this when I click on the "questions" tab. I can open links to questions, go to "tags" page, successfully reach the home page by clicking on the logo etc. I'm using Chrome version 44.0.2403.157 m, Win8 OS. (Reproduced on Firefox 39.0) Just checked SO, SU & SF, and over 15 other SEs, beta or graduated. This seems to only happen on meta.SE; giving a "Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 500 (Internal Server Error)" and redirecting me to this.
Why shouldn't I delete wrong answers?
The FAQ says that wrong answers should be downvoted, not deleted: For answers, any post that is not an answer (should be a comment, doesn't answer the question, etc.) should be deleted. Answers that are wrong or that dispense poor advice should be downvoted, not deleted. The FAQ doesn't explain why; it just says that I shouldn't. Why shouldn't I delete a wrong answer? Is there some value in a wrong answer? I ask because I came across an answer where the author admitted that his answer was wrong.
Site proposal pages on Area 51 are broken
Fixed. We shut down two private betas yesterday, which I suppose is the cause here? What I can't explain is how or why we ended up with additional site records inserted into the Area 51 DB, which caused there to be multiple rows with matching host addresses that we rely on to be unique. I'll monitor things for a while to make sure these don't pop back and try to dig up the root cause next week.
After the move to Denver Stacksnippets.net is offline
Was going to write this as a comment, but I thought I'd make it a full-blown answer instead... The issue still exists, but however it just seems to be a matter of the server certificate rather than the actual server availability itself: when loading the Snippet as a full-page frame: After clicking 'Advanced' and clicking 'Proceed', I can go back to the Snippet and see it perfectly. On Chrome 44.0.2403.130 (Official Build) m (32-bit), Windows 10 Pro x64.
Thumbs up for the backroom crew! (brackets in comments)
I've been on SE for a while now, and it's always irritated me that I couldn't include (bracketed text) within "link text" in comments. I've quite often found myself posting a comment where the entirety of the text I want to be visible to other users is simply one or more sentences lifted straight from a web page, so I just enclose the required text in [square brackets], followed by the web address in (round brackets).
Link to the new mod dashboard sometimes shows up for regular users
The spiffy new mod dashboard is great, but the link sometimes shows when it shouldn't. For example, see Jeff Atwood's profile on Security.SE: After a bit of experimentation, it seems that the link only shows for non-moderators when: When both of these conditions are satisfied, the "mod dashboard" link shows up even for regular, non-moderator users.
Upcoming login changes (Stage 2 now LIVE)
As y'all know, our current flavor of "global authentication" leaves a few things to be desired. It's flaky, requires a page refresh, etc. etc. Wouldn't it be nice if you could just sign in once and be automatically logged in across the network? We are ready to roll out Stage 1 of Project "Make Authentication Suck Less". It is live as of a few minutes ago.

Why is the text editor not two-column?
It will be great if it have two column view mode, like StackEdit. Every time I'm writing a long post, it is frustrating to scroll down and up. Sometimes I just write the post using StackEdit and then paste it here, but why doesn't Stack Exchange do it on its own? Maybe most of time people are writing short answers, which do not need a left-right panel. However, in many cases, especially in math and physics sites, people are writing formula and derive. It is best to have a left and right panel.
Wrongful ban on SO chat for a silly reason?
Today I was banned from StackOverflow chat for 30 minutes for "posting inappropriate content". Transcript (with the irrelevant bits edited out) as follows: All I had said was "guys plz ban", jokingly referring to Don's message. I was not referring to myself and everyone knew that. Honestly it would have been funny to me if the ban was for maybe 2 mins, but half an hour? All respect to BoltClock and the mods that help this community run, but it just seems to me that was a bit childish.
Why didn't this user get any reputation for an accepted answer?
A user on Tavern on the Meta noticed that on a question on Ask Patents, the user whose answer was accepted didn't get the +15 reputation associated with it: ...but however the reputation is listed in their reputation tab: According to their reputation tab, they should have 56 reputation on Ask Patents, but however they only have 41.
How many beta sites can SE design team get graduated per year?
Stéphane Martin also does site designs. Although the designer lineup can change at any time. Several*. Definitely several*. Seriously, we don't know. The design backlog is currently shrinking now that more than just Jin is working on the designs. How long each takes varies by site, although the design team has put a lot of effort into paying down CSS debt and making the designs easier to set up and maintain. I understand the temptation, but honestly... I doubt that.
User is suspended network wide except not really
He was unsuspended manually by a moderator on Lifehacks. This is... probably intentional? The fact that something like this is possible in the first place may or may not be harmful, depending on the user and the site in question. We may revisit network suspensions to lock them down further, but honestly, I'm not too worried about it. It's rare for a "real" user to get suspended network-wide, and if a particular community still feels they're welcome there... fine.
What is the result when a diamond Moderator chooses "Leave Open"?
Does their vote count as just one of several that might kick the question out of the queue, or does it get kicked out right away? The question is removed from the queue immediately. If the question is removed from the queue right away, are all of the other close votes dismissed, or do they stay? The close votes stay, but they start aging away.
Questions from ru.SO shouldn't become hot
Apparently, the localized sites, such as pt.SO and ja.SO are exluded from the Hot Network Questions list. But recently launched ru.SO doesn't have its questions exluded from it:
research - Google best practices for software developers - Programmers Stack Exchange
I think this is looking at it slightly myopically. What is integral to effective and efficient software development (and almost every other profession) is research. Google just happens to be the current tool of choice for getting access to information we now most commonly use for this research. Best practices for researching include: Verify by finding multiple sources that concur Verify by using a multitude of different media.
How to setup stratum with pushpool and VARDIFF? (litecoin)
i have come back to post up all the information i can for you. through the last few months of working with Stratum-mining i have come to some conclusions: you need to know python well to get this working on anything but bitcoin... That being said, its possible to install stratum over a current custom pushpool installation through a project I released and am working on. (Currently it is for freicoin but there are two trivial changes you can make to get my implementation to work on litecoin).
Captcha when logged in
I'm logged in and just submitted an answer to a question on the main site... I was redirected to a Captcha screen asking if I was human. My issue on this page is the screen didn't show the actual Captcha phrase or input field. It just showed the robots at the top and an "I Am Human" button. I used the back arrow in my browser to return to the question page and clicked again to submit my answer... this time it posted without the Captcha page.
Site graduated! New design launched
As you can see the new design just went live. Which means this site has been officially launched! Congratulations! Thank you for your valuable design feedback. If you're still seeing the old favicons, please load the follow urls and do a hard browser refresh. If you see any CSS/styling bugs, please start a new post and tag it with "design" and "bug." We have also updated site's Twitter profile theme. Congrats on the launch and thank you for being an awesome community!
