Our Wic: Lucy Wright Interview
I enter The Straw Yard’s small barn-like space via a gold foil tassel curtain. Inside, plush platinum creatures – swans, fish, crabs, cats, seals and pigeons – adorn a low border marking the throne room’s boundary. I have an 11am appointment to be crowned queen as part of artist Lucy Wright’s Our Wic project with Create Berwick. Twists of gold-lamé with fake (chocolate?) coins in the middle flank the main backdrop.. Maroon fabric hangs behind a gold circular stage covered with lino printed motifs.
Chico da Silva: And the soul is for the birds
As I walk into the first of three large rooms at Nottingham Contemporary, orange walls from floor to ceiling, my first thought is: where are the birds? I find the title intriguing. And the soul is for the birds is the first institutional solo exhibition in Europe of the Brazilian artist Chico da Silva, bringing together paintings from across his career. I am surrounded by artworks depicting fish that take me back to my own experiences of visiting the Amazon.

For Solidarity x Document H.E.T. Alternative Publishing and Community Undercurrents (H.E.T. stands for Hollow Earth Transmission) at The NewBridge Project is part of their ongoing For Solidarity initiative, and raises some timely questions with regards to how the mobilisation and distribution of resources is facilitated in emancipatory political practices.

Lintukoto and The Flowers Stand Silently, Witnessing — Corridor8
How do we tell stories of ongoing dispossession and displacement? How do we mark beginnings and ends of colonial tragedies that are still unfolding? The artworks exhibited at the NewBridge Project in Shieldfield, Newcastle, during the month of November offer some insight into these questions. In a dark room, film footage was playing in a seventeen minute loop. I walked in and slowly sank into a comfortable beanbag positioned on the floor in front of the screen.
Beth J Ross: Her Extraordinary Colours — Corridor8
Her Extraordinary Colours is a public art project featuring twenty flags installed across Berwick-upon-Tweed. Over ten weeks, artist Beth J. Ross worked with a group of local women to research and uncover historic stories of women from Berwick and the surrounding area. Drawing on the King’s Own Scottish Borderers’ archive and Ross’ background in geometric abstraction, the group translated these stories into playful and striking flags.
