Flat owner gets community order amid fire concerns

The director of a company which ran a high-rise residential block of flats has been given an 18-month community order for fire safety failures which experts said placed residents at risk of death or serious injury. Stephen David Phillips, 56, who owns Latitude 52 in Albert Road, Plymouth, was also ordered to pay about £35,000 in costs at Plymouth Crown Court.

A woman who says she was beaten, burned and starved as a child says she is outraged her birth mother has been released from prison after serving only eight months of a 20-month prison sentence. A judge said Caroline Eshghi from Cornwall was subjected to a "dreadful catalogue of cruelty and abuse" by Melanie Burmingham over a period of 12 years. Eshgui has been calling for sentencing guidelines to be changed so survivors of historical abuse are not denied justice, as she says she has been.
