1 Introduction The burden of liver disease, while being largely preventable, is increasing in England compared to a decline in most other European countries, with key risk factors being alcohol use, obesity and viral hepatitis [1]. People living with chronic hepatitis C (HCV) or B (HBV) are at an increased risk of liver cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease (ESLD) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which cause severe disease and death.
