CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. — The hills around Crested Butte have a life of their own. The peaks in the area all have unique characteristics – and they are home to some of the best wildflower displays in the state. The mountains are usually a blanket of pinks, reds, purples, and yellows, but as the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival opened its 40th season on Friday, the flowers had a different story to tell this year. "We have a lot of flowers," said David Kish, the festival’s executive director.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Lakewood's Green Mountain is not always so green — especially during a year like 2026. "We joke that Green Mountain is maybe only green for six weeks out of the year — this year it's more like three," said Grace King, a naturalist park ranger with Lakewood. As she stood on one of the highest points of a very dry William Frederick Hayden Park on Green Mountain, King noted that other colors were missing this year as well.
