Why rural and tribal libraries in New Mexico need funding priority
LOCAL COLUMN As technology makes it easier to never leave home, New Mexico’s public libraries are more important than ever. And the smaller the community, the more essential the library. As an author who enjoys talking about the joys of reading and writing, I’ve had the opportunity to visit many of our state’s rural libraries. They have a special place in my heart. Vibrant and as diverse as the little villages they serve, these libraries are more than places for books.

Frances Crane and the Unique Charms of a Classic New Mexico Mystery
One of the great joys of discovering a skillfully constructed novel is the story’s ability to put the readers inside the skin of the characters. In the case of Frances Crane’s The Turquoise Shop, readers travel back to the 1940s and a small town in northern New Mexico filled with pleasantly quirky folks and a pair of murders to be solved.

"Stargazer" By Anne Hillerman
"Stargazer" By Anne Hillerman Review by Joan Leotta Anne Hillerman has continued the characters in her father Tony Hillerman’s beloved series featuring Navajo detectives. Anne Hillerman shifts the focus slightly from the two male detectives Chee and Leaphorn to the young, clever, feisty Bernadette Manuelito aka Mrs. Chee.
Finding Inspiration for Fiction In the Kindness of Untruths
Each time I get ready to start writing a book, I look for new ideas. In the case of Stargazer, my newest mystery, many concepts I used started with an incident from real life and, tweaked by the imagination, found their way into the novel. Some of these thoughts came to me as I stood under the night sky. I’ll explain in a minute. Before I started, I knew the story belonged to Officer Bernadette Manuelito. My other two fictional detectives, Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn, would take supporting roles.

Marie Flanigan recommends Cave of Bones
I enjoyed Tony Hillerman's books for many years and didn't know how I'd feel about Anne Hillerman taking over, but I have thus far enjoyed all her entries in the series. They are in the same vein, but different enough to feel like her own work rather than just a copy of his. I also like that she's expanded the series and moved it forward in a way that makes sense rather than just an abrupt change. Reasons I enjoyed this book: Action-packed Page-turner Wonderful characters

Bourbon Grill serves familiar fare
SANTA FE – One of Santa Fe’s newer restaurants, Bourbon Grill offers a nostalgically classic steakhouse experience. Friends and I went once for appetizers and then again for full dinners. Each time, the service was exceptional and the food, while nothing to rave about, was well-prepared and presented as advertised. The menu struck me as generic American; the owners of Bourbon Grill could take this concept anywhere in America without changing a thing.
Review: El Mesón gets top marks for food, service and ambiance
Located just a block north of the Plaza, El Mesón is a Santa Fe favorite. Friends and I were lucky to get the last open table in the dining room on a recent weekend when we called for a reservation. Normally, I sit in the bar here, not only because that’s where the music is, but also because guests have access to all the tapas and desserts. But on this visit, we had a lot to talk about and the dining room provided a fine atmosphere for conversation.
Sazón beautifully blends ambiance, fine food, service
Sazón, which opened in September, is one of those rare establishments that seems to have it all: a beautiful space for dining, great food and first-rate service. It’s a rich addition to Santa Fe’s fine dining scene with its own niche. If you think of Mexican food as only tacos al pastor and enchiladas suizas, Sazón will challenge and delight your palate. Even if you aren’t up for the signature appetizer of baby grasshoppers.
Savor a top-notch meal in classy setting at Coyote Cafe
SANTA FE, N.M. — Enticing elk, perfect prawns, artful arugula. My goodness, the Coyote Cafe is at the top of its game. My recent dinner there on a cold December evening was one of the best meals I’ve savored in 2015. A big bravo to chef Eric di Stefano and his staff. (By the way, this restaurant and its sister, the Coyote Cantina, are very different establishments. I like the open-air cantina for a casual summer meal and a cold beer.
