COVID-19, and the economic challenges this has created for companies, will result in employers across Europe forced into cutting costs, which may well include having to make redundancies. Redundancy procedures are, however, tightly regulated with employee’s rights closely protected by both legislation and case law. This is especially the case when collective redundancies are required.

COVID-19 has caused a radical shift in the working patterns of European employees. During the outbreak, to combat the spread of the virus non-essential businesses were forced to close and employees were furloughed or required to work from home. In our previous article, we discussed the challenges that working from home by employees placed on companies, especially with respect to ensuring their health & safety, enabling a suitable home work environment and protecting personal and corporate data.

COVID 19 and the resulting measures implemented across Europe to limit the spread of the virus resulted in a mass movement towards working from home. As the number of cases start to fall and countries seemingly bring the virus under control, restrictions put in place on the opening of offices are now largely being eased, precipitating a partial and gradual return of workers to their places of work.
