A Black and reportedly autistic man touted as the youngest scholar of color to serve as a chair at the University of Cambridge was accused of plagiarism before authorities say he took his own life last week. If that were the only headline following professor Jason Arday's death at age 41, then it would be tragic enough.

Vice President JD Vance's new book, "Communion," is not only his story of his conversion to Catholicism in 2019, it's also his pitch to Republicans, especially religious ones, about why he has the mettle to be the party's 2028 presidential candidate. Writing a book has become a prerequisite for a presidential run, but as a professor who has read some awful writing, I find that Vance's new book ranks among the worst things I've read.

Pope Leo XIV apologizing for slavery within his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, was not on my bingo card. As an African American and a fourth-generation Catholic (at least as far as I can go back), I have always had a testy, uneasy relationship with the church. After all, my extended family — who are Catholic and from Louisiana — knows we are probably Catholic because our ancestors most likely were held by a slave owner who professed that faith.
