Appeals court upholds Tennessee waiting-period law
CINCINNATI (BP) – Pro-life leaders and Tennessee officials commended a federal appeals court opinion Thursday (Aug. 5) that upheld a state law requiring a 48-hour waiting period before an abortion. The full Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati overturned by a 9-7 majority a federal judge’s 2020 decision that invalidated the waiting-period law. The appeals court also reversed its own three-judge panel that refused by a 2-1 margin in February to place the law back into effect.

FIRST-PERSON: Read the Bible
NASHVILLE (BP) – Subsequent to my personal salvation experience in Jesus Christ and then determining to begin each day in personal time with God, the most significant spiritual decision I have made in my life is to read the Bible daily, consistently and wholly. As of today (Aug. 6), I will have completed reading through the Bible for a consecutive 31 years. Nothing has impacted me any greater and empowered me more to grow in the grace of God daily than reading through the Bible each year.
FIRST-PERSON: Thoughts on (soul) winning with Bobby Bowden
EDITOR’S NOTE: Paul Chitwood is president of the International Mission Board. “Is winning everything?” I asked. “No. But winning is important. If you don’t win, they fire you,” replied Coach Bowden. Bobby Bowden coached football for more than 50 years. Over the course of 34 seasons as head coach of the Florida State Seminoles, his teams won twelve conference championships and two national championships. Coach Bowden knows about winning. Like all coaches, he also knows about losing.

ATLANTA (BP) — In a video announcement following the online service at First Baptist Church in Atlanta today, longtime pastor Charles Stanley announced his transition to pastor emeritus. Stanley, who came to First Baptist as an associate pastor in 1969 before being named pastor two years later, informed the church’s board earlier this month of the decision. “I’m so grateful [God] saw fit to allow me to serve as your pastor for more than 50 years,” he said.
Fires ravage Pacific Northwest, churches respond
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (BP) – Len Arney has seen ash before, and he offers a little perspective. “When Mount St. Helens blew – it’s not as bad as that,” said Arney, referring to the massive volcanic explosion in 1980. But the ash, blown into the Willamette Valley from the multiple wildfires raging this week in the nearby foothills of the Cascade Range, resembled snowfall. A thin layer covered windshields. Vehicles left visible tire tracks. The air quality ranged from poor to hazardous.
California church ministers to wildfire evacuees
CLOVIS, Calif. – When Pastor Shawn Beaty and his congregation began helping evacuees of the Creek Fire near Fresno, he had no idea the ministry would “grow and spin bigger” than he could have ever imagined, serving as many as 2,000 families in one week. Shawn Beaty (left), pastor of Clovis Hills Community Church in Clovis, Calif., talks with an evacuee from the nearby Creek Fire who came to the church campus for essentials while away from her home.
9/11 spurred 'unity of prayer,' Ground Zero chaplain says
NEW YORK (BP) – Even months after the towers fell, the debris remained. Don Pierson saw it everywhere – in the city streets and the subways. And as the dust lingered, so did the hurt, anger and fear. But according to Pierson, that potent combination of emotions pushed people to find more strength and unity in prayer than he had ever before experienced. As the chaplain coordinator for Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief (SBDR), Pierson was deployed to New York after 9/11.
Georgia coach recalls moment Bobby Bowden led him to Jesus
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP)–God used a player and a coach in the 1980s to bring a young man named Mark Richt to saving faith in Jesus Christ. The player was a free safety at the University of Miami named John Peasley. The coach was none other than Bobby Bowden, whom Richt will now face as a fellow head coach in the Nokia Sugar Bowl when his Georgia Bulldogs take on Bowden’s Florida State Seminoles.
