If a plane leaves New York heading for London and is just 1% off course from the start, where do you think it ends up? It sounds minor, doesn’t it? A single degree or two in the wrong direction. But over the 3,500 miles between JFK and Heathrow, that tiny misalignment would cause the plane to miss its target by over 280 miles — landing somewhere towards the South of France, or even Northern Scotland, depending on which way it drifted.
