This article suggests a new model that is fair to all and gives all types of vehicle manufacturers incentives to make vehicles more sustainable. i.e. vehicles should only be replaced when they are no longer viable. New ways to tax vehicle use are needed to encourage sustainable road transport globally. This article proposes a new model to make vehicles more sustainable by being fair to everyone and providing incentives for manufacturers of all types of vehicles. This means that a vehicle should only be replaced when it is no longer usable. Currently, gasoline and diesel vehicles are taxed based on the fuel they use. The more you drive, the more fuel you use and the more taxes you pay.
Dear Banks, It's Time To Pay Your Debts
The moment has arrived for banks and fintech to pay their debts – environmental debts – after years of collecting them. With sustainability being one of the most essential aspects of strategy and concern, many of them have evolved into ESG. What do they, and we as customers, need to do to ultimately care for our most precious resource: the Earth? In recent years, the younger generations of investors have started a 21st century-worthy trend: put your money where your values are.
Why Banks Need the Cloud in the Race to Net-Zero
Kalliopi Chioti, Chief Environmental, Social and Governance Officer, Temenos. Banking’s push to digitise has primarily been driven by financial and compliance pressures, increasing competition and customer demand. Cloud has provided the means for banks to answer these challenges: from cutting innovation cycles to lowering costs and improving customer experiences. The cloud is also helping banks address their other key challenge, the net-zero race.
Harnessing technology to drive ESG compliance in advance of new SFDR regulation
High-profile scandals, such as the regulatory investigation into whether the DWS Group misled clients about sustainable investing, and due to mis-selling, has raised concerns that some ESG funds are misleading. However, despite these headlines, a key challenge many investment firms face is sourcing real-time quality data to support green claims in their ESG-labelled investment funds. This is even more challenging with private companies where the availability of data is far more restricted.
Priming your Business Cases for Success in the Digital Era
Introduction Digital banking services are now of critical importance to financial services customers. In the digital age we live in, banks must be able to offer complex products whilst giving customers access to services at their fingertips. Many of the ‘analogue’, traditional banks have been slow to change the way they prioritise business cases to compete with the ‘digital’, challenger banks.
Will terms such as HALO and LEOs enabled MNOs be common terms by 2030, as GPS and 5G are now?
As we move through the 2020's will these two terms become common in the Mobile phone and broadband ecosystems or fade away as the terms WAP and Fax have since the 2000’s. As a Digital Architect in Capgemini Invent, my role across businesses in assessing the technologies available and their use to deliver enhanced customer and client value is key.
From open banking to open finance: what’s next for innovation in financial services?
Open banking has been a game-changer for financial services. It has enabled financial institutions and third-party providers (TPPs) to exchange data and services – not only enhancing existing capabilities but delivering improved experiences to market with access to transaction data. Take a mortgage application, for example. With open banking, customers can receive quicker, more informed decisions from mortgage providers by consenting to share transactional data electronically.
Four years of Open Banking: 2022 may be the best year yet
January marked four years since the introduction of Open Banking. Although industry take up was initially slow, 2021 proved to be a catalyst for the initiative. Furthermore, with 1 million regular and active users joining Open Banking every 6 months, it now has over 4.5 million regular users.
Banking as a Platform- The Future is Now!
The era of platforms has dawned. This is not only evident in the meteoric rise of the usage of “platform” companies by customers; but also in their valuations. The platform providers have found foothold in almost all fields – be it healthcare, retail, technology, entertainment, transport, hospitality and of course finance.
How investment banks can respond to the fintech challenge
With the world’s largest institutions facing an existential threat from new fintech challengers, all eyes are on the DevOps team and their in-house lab to drive their own innovation in response. However, burdened with a legacy network and massively complex and interwoven 3rd party systems, banks’ DevOps teams are fighting on two fronts. Whatever statistics you look at, there is no doubting that the banking sector is being given a thorough shake-up by fintech challenges come at it from every angle.
The State of Payments: July 2019
A week is a long time in politics – a saying that is increasingly true for payments too. We are now two weeks into July 2019, so a good point perhaps to reflect on the state of the industry. Payments is an industry which is changing - and quickly. Old technology trying to operate in a new world doesn’t cut the mustard anymore. Innovation and disruption in respect to financial services is becoming the new normal.

What if...
"What if everything is an illusion and nothing exists? In that case, I definitely overpaid for my carpet." Woody Allen What if, during your next hotel stay, a digital kiosk used facial recognition software to recover your reservation, a voice-controlled smart speaker adjusted the temperature in your room, and an artificial intelligence-powered robot delivered your room service? It sounds like a scene straight out of a movie, but it's real.
Are 'Gestures' and your 'Gait' the future to securing transactions?

Building software development around customer needs
A 2018 report by Accenture, Back Office, it’s Time to Meet the Customers, found that 75% of operational leaders at banks now want to focus on customer experience more than on efficiency. The driver behind this view is undoubtedly higher customer expectations not just for excellent service, but for better personalization and engagement as well. The financial institutions that fail to recognise this trend will surely run the risk of falling behind their competitors.
What can four innovative fintech startups and their investors tell us about the future?
Fintech is a sector that thrives only through innovation. It’s in constant flux; changing and evolving all the time. While we can see spikes of activity and the general trajectory, it’s hard to predict what lies ahead just by taking a high-level view.
What is holding back commercial eID services?
The recent article[1] about the UK governments attempts to facilitate eID for government services being handed to the private sector made me think what is holding the eID market back? With mobile phone and integration of connected devices technologies improving the security and user experience for digital services. The use of biometric sensors in devices require companies to relying on and to trust the device and the associated biometric infrastructure.
WeChat Pay in Russia
Previously, I wrote a couple of articles on Alipay and WeChat Pay, their history and strategy, their progress on the Russian ground. Not only them, Alibaba and Tencent, overall. Since then, things were constantly moving forward. FT Confidential Research, 2018 First of all, WeChat Pay continued skyrocketing, obviously getting to Alipay popularity level, or even exceeding it.

Two rivers becoming one..
The rapidly swelling data river (MyData, Big Data, Open Data, structured and unstructured) and the service design river namely. In the Real Time Economy program (2006-) we have seen important progress towards getting financial and administrative data digitalised into structured and standardised form moving increasingly into real time. This is also making data verified and ensuring that it is used by authorised persons - ie taking away much of fraud risks.
Open Banking and the magic illusion of 24x7 availability
“The more things change, the more they stay the same.” The wisdom in this old adage appears to ring true when applied to the early phases of the evolution of Open Banking (or open payments). Especially when you contrast it with the early days of ATM withdrawals; particularly those made in the dead of night so you could pay cash for your after-party greasy feast. In both scenarios, a real-time balance is essential to ensure cleared funds are honoured.

The US is, supposedly, moving to chip cards today (EMV technology), away from all the unsecured magnetic-stripe cards...well, sort of.
Cash is queen - green, but not quite king
The road from cash and cash registers to #NextGenPOS with integrated payments Payments providers and NextGenPOS software providers together offer merchants a great way to control their income and manage their business. Yet their biggest competition, the status quo of cash and cash registers, still has the upper hand in the small merchant market segment. Why is that and at what time point will a small merchant prefer card payments over cash as well as NextGenPOS over a cash register?
Bio-metrics lowering friction in payments
Reading an article of linking facial recognition systems to in-store payments made me think about where next for biometrics in payments in the real world[1]. Payments at the highest level is one entity the ‘payer’ presenting funds to another entity the ‘payee’.
The Impact of M-PESA on Bank Performance in Kenya
M-PESA in Kenya is widely regarded as an outstanding success in mobile money. The service has around 17m active customers and in 2016 generated about $400m in revenue for Safaricom, its parent company. It is therefore interesting to reflect on how this success has impacted the banks in Kenya which have largely ceded the basic money transfer market to mobile operators. The Central Bank of Kenya reports on the structure and performance of the banking industry.
