Some tintypes I made using focusing loupes as lenses
This personal project was born of lifelong pursuit of charting new paths upon the broad field of artistic landscape, combined with an unexplained passion for vintage ground glass focusing loupes. I’ll never seize looking for magical yet unexplored ways in which to see the world, and translating those findings into the language of photography; this is but one such journey. A lot of people have used a plethora of things in place of a lens to make photographic images.
Brief history and development of ground glass focusing loupes
This post is dedicated to a very helpful yet often-overlooked photographic accessory. After scouring the web, at this point, I have only been able to find few brief entries dedicated to those devices, so I hope my writing will be found helpful by inquisitive minds interested in the history of photo equipment. Tintypes Made Using Focusing Loupes as Lenses is a companion post to this one.

A Brief History of Ground Glass Focusing Loupes

After scouring the Web, I have only been able to find few brief entries dedicated to those devices, so I hope my writing will be found helpful by inquisitive minds interested in the history of photo equipment. From 1872 book ‘Ferrotypes And How To Make Them’ My passion for vintage large format focusing loupes was sparked by a visit to Will Dunniway’s home about seven years ago.
Morsiple Messages: A Daguerreotype Multiple Exposure Method
In early spring 1839, Paris was abuzz with excitement in connection with a recently published letter, in which the invention of photography was confirmed by reliable sources. The world was now waiting for the French government to work out a deal with its inventor Louis J.M. Daguerre for details of the daguerreotype process to become public. At the same time, another newly invented mode of communication was making its first appearance on the scene; Samuel B.
Daguerrean Dream: A Visual Symphony in 43 Daguerreotype Plates
Having now finalized work on this series, I will attempt to put into words its impetus, as well as how it came to fruition. This will be a lengthy entry, proportional in size to the monumentally significant nature of this work for me, and therefore I shall start from the beginning, as all things have their origins. In mid-October 2018, a somewhat local man, known to himself and some others as a photographic artist, stopped by my studio.
Shooting Daguerreotypes of California Redwoods
This trip has been waiting in the wings ever since I made my first successful daguerreotype in the redwoods two years ago. I actually planned on going as early as August this year, but one project after another kept getting in the way, and for months I kept pushing it back by a couple of weeks. When I got tired of pushing it back, weather moved into the region, bringing with it two weeks of solid rain. That’s when the trip to the always reliably dry desert to shoot those petroglyphs happened.
Petroglyph Daguerreotypes on Daguerre’s Birthday
Toward the end of November, I went back to one of my favorite places in the desert. A spot out in the middle of nowhere, with the nearest significant human population well over an hour drive away. A tall cliff overlooks the arid desert plateau there, running for a few hundred yards north to south. Winds blow tumbleweeds between desert shrubs and over cacti, and aside from lizards and flies, it’s rare to see much life. This wasn’t always the case though.
"Chimacabres" are unique creatures created by combining daguerreotype with light painting
Chimacabres come out at night. They are around during the day too of course, but the night is when they really thrive. In the dark it’s harder to tell if you’re face to face with a fellow person, or if it’s a chimacabre in front of you, and they don’t even have faces. No, they are vicious, purely instinctual, unforgiving. They read you with the speed of a car commercial disclaimer, immediately sniff out the soft spot, and burrow in mercilessly.

Light Formulation: Statement of an Artist
I always resisted writing artist statements and bios. In school, that part of every assignment or exhibition was the most agonizing. It felt overly simplistic to just describe what the viewer was about to encounter, or why objects or abstract shapes, making my specific image or groups of images, were presented in this way or another.
A multi plate, multi lens daguerreotype panorama
I haven’t posted much lately, because I’ve been experimenting non-stop with a few new daguerreotype techniques, and however promising the results are looking so far, those experiments are slow going, and I’ll release at least part of it hopefully soon. But here’s something I thought up and was able to execute in a relatively speedy manner, which I believe warrants a look. I don’t believe this method of making a panoramic image has ever been utilized before, so I’m dubbing it ‘Antorama’.

SCP Tutorial: Integrate Google Calendar and Mobile Cards through Open Connectors
Hello Dear Community, in this tutorial we’re going to perform entralling journey and take a look at how we can solve the task of delivering Google Calendar events into SAP Mobile Cards application on a mobile phone. This is called a Tutorial (instead of just an article) because here I’m going to describe step-by-step path from the goal discovery up to the finish.
Making Collodion From Scratch
A few days ago, for the first time ever in my experience with wet plate photography, I mixed up collodion from scratch. I thought I’d share about the experience. First of all, plain USP (U.S. Pharmacopeia) Collodion is a mixture of ether, alcohol, and nitrocellulose (also known as nitrated or guncotton). It is the nitrocellulose that acts as a binder and carrier for photo-sensitive salts of silver while making wet collodion images.
Using a Rolleiflex to Make Tintypes and Daguerreotypes
Those who have known me long enough are aware of my passion for Rolleiflex cameras. Back before I got deeper and deeper into alternative photography I used to shoot my TLRs all the time. Sadly, ever since I got bitten by the collodion bug of wet plate and then thoroughly chewed by the silver monster of daguerreotypes all my film cameras, including the Rolleis, have been sitting quite idle.
