Introduction Microbial cells interact with a large variety of toxic organic compounds that are produced by other organisms. To prevent harm from these compounds, cells actively pump them out of the cytoplasm into the environment (Paulsen, 2003; Orelle et al., 2023). The efflux is mediated by the plasma membrane transporter proteins belonging to the ABC- and MFS-transporter families (Cannon et al., 2009).
