1 Introduction Overt gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is divided into upper and lower GI bleeding. Hematemesis is the usual symptom of overt UGIB; if the bleeding is abrupt, melena and hematochezia may also occur. Hematochezia is the characteristic symptom of overt LGIB; melena may develop if the bleeding originates in the small intestine or proximal colon [1].
