Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I had a kiddie typewriter when I was little.
How is social media changing news?
It's revealing how the sausage is made.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By e-mail, but *only* if you've read my recent stories and personalize your pitch. Generic press releases aren't effective.
What's your favorite social network?
Hard to say. They all serve distinct purposes: Twitter for the media water cooler, Facebook for friends' updates, Tumblr for inspiration.
Why did you become a journalist?
I've always loved magazines, and since high school, my goal was to work for one.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No. My HS program had a set track that prevented me from taking the newspaper course. I was on the literary magazine staff one year, though.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Read voraciously. Be curious and take time to get to know people.
When's the best time to pitch you?
In the morning.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Curled up on a sofa, reading a book or magazine.
