Archa. Kniha druhá - Alastair Reynolds
O knize Archa.

Alastair Reynolds: An exclusive short story for New Scientist
It was a foggy December, colder than usual. An old woman waded through the shallows of a concrete-bound river. She wore overalls and a breather mask, a meshwork hopper slung over her back. She leaned hard on two sticks, one with a grabber on the end, the other a net. At intervals, she scooped some grey, slimy clump from the river and deposited it in the hopper. Dusk was falling as the woman paused for breath. She rested on the sticks and took off her mask.
11 Books That Changed How I Think About Space Opera
We are living in a new golden age of space opera. People have proclaimed the death of this vital subgenre many times over the decades—but like a deep space probe upgraded by godlike aliens, space opera keeps coming back. (See my article in Esquire for more details!) I recently wrote a whole space opera trilogy, full of all my favorite space things. I wouldn’t be writing space opera if I hadn’t read some incredible examples of the genre and had my brain exploded.
The Star and the Strange Moon
Constance Sayers. Redhook, $30 (448p) ISBN 978-0-316-49374-1 Sayers (The Ladies of the Secret Circus) returns with a wonderfully creepy tale of ambition, loss, and the lure of an unsolved mystery. From a young age, Christopher Kent learned to take care of both himself and his unstable mother as they moved from motel to motel. Then she has a breakdown that he can neither handle nor conceal, triggered by seeing a photo of Gemma Turner, a Hollywood starlet who disappeared in the 1960s.
Detonation Boulevard
In a cosmic rally race winding 12,000 kilometers across Io’s treacherous surface in just 60 hours, all while dodging the competition, fatigue, and violent lava geysers—there’s only one way Cat knows how to win: Just drive. I raised a fist and strode out into the full glare of the floods. Crowds roared in my earpiece as I stopped to take it all in, recalling the words of my old mentor. Before he flamed out across Utopia, Joff had told me to savour moments like this one while I still had the chance.

Prefect Dreyfus Emergency, book 1: Aurora Rising / The Prefect de Alastair Reynolds

Supply chain disruption and high volatility
Aside from its tragic human cost, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has a global economic consequence not only through sanctions but also through commodity prices and supply chains which will need to be addressed in several areas, such as the automotive industry, green energy solutions and electrification. High levels of volatility have been experienced in global markets following the conflict and we highlight here a few of the issues driving this.
The Nova Incident by Dan Moren
Dan Moren. Angry Robot, $15.99 trade paper (400p) ISBN 978-0-85766-945-2 Moren’s third Galactic Cold War space opera (after The Aleph Extraction) looks to the internal politics of the Commonwealth for a breathtakingly twisty story. This outing leans to the investigative and procedural side, but still provides plenty of adrenaline-filled maneuvers by a team that trusts one another’s competence if not always one another’s motives.
