Roar Media — বাঙালির কাছে অতি পছন্দের মাছের কথা জিজ্ঞেস করলে ইলিশের কথা আসবেই। বিশ্বের ৮৬% ইলিশ এককভাবে বাংলাদেশে উৎপাদিত হয়। সেই হিসেব ইলিশের একচ্ছত্র অধিকার বাংলাদেশের দখলে। ধোঁয়া ওঠা ভাতের সাথে ইলিশ পছন্দ করে না, এমন বাঙালি সম্ভবত পাওয়া যাবে না। উৎপত্তিগতভাবে 'ইলিশ' শব্দটি সংস্কৃত ভাষা থেকে এসেছে। সংস্কৃতে বলা হয় 'ইলীশ'। ইল+ঈশ- এই হলো সন্ধি-বিচ্ছেদ। 'ইল' মানে জলের মধ্যে, আর 'ঈশ' মানে রাজা। তাহলে 'ইলীশ' মানে দাঁড়ায় 'জলের রাজা'। যদিও ইলিশ শব্দটি এখন ইলিশ হিসেবে লেখা হয়। ইলিশ যে জলের রাজা তা যেকোনো রসনাবিলাসী বাঙালি স্বীকার করবেই, তবে অবাঙালিদের কথা ভিন্ন!
