Salary Is the Most Important Job Factor to American Workers
Despite the old adage of "do what you love and never you'll never work a day in your life," salary is still the top priority for most American workers, a new survey found. A Washington Post-Ipsos poll of 1,148 workers between ages 18 to 64 highlighted the breadth of changes that have happened to the workplace over the past few years in regard to priorities and norms.
How to Boost Your Productivity With Time Batching
On average, one in eight people use a dedicated time management technique to improve productivity and performance within and outside of the workplace. Time batching is one of the ways in which you can manage your time and focus levels to improve your productivity and performance rate. So, what is time batching? Time batching is a work method that allows you to focus on a particular group of tasks at a given time to ensure an easy workflow.
Your Boss is Watching You. Here's Why Monitoring Workers Can Be a Two-Edged Sword
A recent New York Times story examined how American companies track and monitor their workers. More and more employers are relying on invasive technology to monitor their workers. Although there are definitely challenges in managing employees in today's fast-paced online world, closely monitoring their every minute may not be the best solution. What does employee monitoring say about the relationship between workers and their companies?

Imagine if plaintiffs could sue and hold corporate defendants accountable in the courts of other states simply because it was convenient and that defendant consented to jurisdiction when registering to do business in that state. The U.S. Supreme Court could soon make it possible for plaintiffs to bring products liability, personal injury, and other claims in states far from the places where the defendant companies are headquartered or where they do most of their business.
It Pays to Protect Your Work
You've spent untold hours and substantial sums of money developing your company's secret sauce, proprietary source code or magic pills. But if you haven't taken the proper steps to keep those gems from being stolen or exploited, your investment may go up in a cloud of virtual smoke. In the blink of an eye, you could lose all your work. If you've created anything — software, music, stage plays, or tequila — you must invest time and money to protect your intellectual property (IP).
Women's Voices Make Businesses Better Original
Years ago, women who wanted to be taken seriously in the business world had to assume the characteristics of a man in a male-dominated world. They dressed in dark suits, spoke in deep voices, took aggressive and assertive stances in the boardroom and in negotiations, and showed little to no emotion. How ridiculous, if not unnatural, to be forced to downplay one's gender.

Jury Selection in Civil Trials Should Be Less Challenging
On the first day of 2022, a significant change took effect in the way California juries are chosen. AB 3070, signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sept. 30, 2020, bars parties in criminal cases from using peremptory challenges to remove prospective jurors because of their race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national original or religious affiliation.
Diversity Starts at the Top: Embrace Different Perspectives for Maximum Success
Great businesses are like rainbows, reflecting and refracting light into an array of vibrant colors. Successful business people understand that the broader their reach, the greater the palette of colors they’ll be able to display. Our world is now moving away from antiquated norms imposed by a select few and embracing a more realistic and inclusive view of humanity. Over the past year, we’ve been forced to explore diversity in new and unexpected ways.

Expert Advice: Creating a Record Label, the Artist’s Way
Artistry is all about making choices. As a DJ and music producer, I make choices every time I sit down to create a track. I decide, for example, how to employ beats per minute or combine two vocal elements to realize my vision. Since starting the techno and house record label There Is A Light this year, I have suddenly been faced with a different array of choices, many of them involving money.
This Is Why It Pays to Be Charitable Year Round
As the holiday season approaches, many business owners are thinking about scheduling parties, buying gifts for key customers and calculating employee bonuses. But now is also the perfect time to think about charitable giving. Year-end gifts are not only important for the recipients, but they can also be extremely beneficial for the companies that make them. But charitable giving shouldn’t be restricted to the holidays.
When Does Marketing Hype Go Too Far?
Being in business means being in a constant state of self-promotion. Enterprises survive and thrive by attracting customers, clients and investors, and are using ever more sophisticated tools to do so. But ultimately, it all comes down to telling a compelling story. Why should consumers use your services or buy your product rather than the one sitting next to it on the retail shelf? Why should investors give you their money, instead of to competitors?
Why Business Lawyers Are a Necessary Expense
Lawyers can be expensive. I myself am a victim’s attorney, so my contingent fees come at the end of my cases, out of money that I recover for my clients, not up-front. But I also happen to be a business owner, so I know that in order to be successful, you must be willing to spend money on a good business attorney. Despite the significant initial expense, not having the right lawyer to advise you about your new business can end up being far more expensive in the long run.

Law is a rules-based profession for a reason. Attorneys are trained to understand and interpret basic to complex rules that instruct how we all live and work together. They are governed by rules of procedure and ethics that protect the public and maintain the integrity and stature of the profession. At the same time, many lawyers are creatures of habit, and those habits can become yet another set of hidebound rules. This column looks at more norms that constrain lawyers without serving a purpose.

Social media has rapidly become the medium of choice for marketing and communications. Whether for personal interactions or for political and commercial purposes, everyone these days seems to be on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, and the pandemic-driven bump in social media use shows no signs of waning as we enter a post-pandemic existence. More and more people are finding that a random, sometimes thoughtless, comment can become fodder for viral messaging.

Ralph Baxter and Zachariah DeMeola believe the legal system is broken ("The legal system is broken; it's time for change," Mar. 22, 2021). Their arguments for why and how nonlawyer ownership of law firms is the fix do not withstand the slightest scrutiny. They conveniently sidestep the most critical problems of nonlawyer firm ownership raised by Arash Homampour ("A regulatory 'sandbox' that will turn to quicksand," Feb. 26, 2021).

We've all heard the phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." But attempting to do so can backfire and cause more harm than good. Allowing nonlawyers into the legal profession will introduce the virus of profits over safety, which lawyers fight to eradicate. Clinical trials should take place before we allow nonprofessionals in. We are being asked to accept the "Widget Theory" of legal services, where law firms become manufacturing companies and legal matters are widgets.
