Solid-state transverse Anderson localized fiber laser
For the first time, to our knowledge, an all-solid transverse Anderson localizing optical fiber laser is demonstrated. A combination of the molten core and stack-and-draw fiber fabrication techniques is used to produce a 112 µm core diameter fiber that is a random array of Yb-doped high index and passive low index regions.
Quantum decay of an optical soliton
Abstract Optical solitons are known to be classically stable objects which are robust to perturbations. In this work we show that due to quantum-mechanical effects, an optical soliton that is initially in a classical soliton coherent state will shed photons into the continuum and hence decay.
Laser cooling experiments to measure the quantum efficiency of Yb-doped silica fibers
Abstract A detailed investigation into the wavelength-dependent cooling efficiencies of two ultra-pure large core diameter ytterbium-doped silica fibers is carried out by means of the laser-induced thermal modulation spectroscopy (LITMoS) method. From these measurements, an external quantum efficiency of 0.99 is obtained for both fibers. Optimal cooling is seen for pump wavelengths between 1032 and 1035 nm.

Observation of optical nonlinearities in an all-solid transverse Anderson localizing optical fiber
Abstract An all-solid transverse Anderson localizing optical fiber (TALOF) was fabricated using a novel combination of the stack-and-draw and molten core methods. Strong Anderson localization is observed in multiple regions of the fiber cross section associated with the higher index strontium aluminosilicate phases randomly arranged within a pure silica matrix. Further, to the best of our knowledge, nonlinear four-wave mixing is reported for the first time in a TALOF.
Impact of spatial correlation in fluctuations of the refractive index on rogue wave generation probability
Abstract The presence of refractive index fluctuations in an optical medium can result in the generation of optical rogue waves (RWs). Using numerical simulations and statistical analysis, we have shown that the probability of optical rogue waves increases in the presence of spatial correlations in the fluctuations of the refractive index. We have analyzed the impact of the magnitude and the spatial correlation length of these fluctuations on the probability of optical rogue wave generation.
A path to high-quality imaging through disordered optical fibers: a review
Abstract In this paper, we review recent progress in disordered optical fiber featuring transverse Anderson localization and its applications for imaging. Anderson localizing optical fiber has a transversely random but longitudinally uniform refractive index profile. The strong scattering from the transversely disordered refractive index profiles generates thousands of guiding modes that are spatially isolated and mainly demonstrate single-mode properties.
Method for measuring the resonant absorption coefficient of rare-earth-doped optical fibers
Abstract A nondestructive method for measuring the resonant absorption coefficient of rare-earth-doped optical fibers is introduced. It can be applied to a broad range of fiber designs and host materials. The method compares the side-collected spontaneous emission at two arbitrary locations along the fiber as a function of the pump wavelength to extract the absorption coefficient. It provides an attractive and accurate alternative to other available techniques.
Disorder-induced high-quality wavefront in an Anderson localizing optical fiber
High-quality coherent wavefronts are extremely useful in optical communications and lasers. Disorder is usually considered as a source of noise and deviation from ideal designs for generating high-quality beams in photonic devices. Here, we demonstrate that strong disorder can be exploited to obtain high-quality wavefronts thanks to the Anderson localization phenomenon. Our analysis on a transverse Anderson localizing optical fiber reveals that a considerable number of the guided modes have values.

Secure information transport by transverse localization of light
Our Anderson-based encoding and encryption system relies on a quantum key distribution algorithm similar to the one used in commercial quantum cryptography, i.e., based on standard laser sources highly attenuated in order to improve the single photon component. In Fig. 2 we measure the shape of a single localized state in the low light regime with a single photon counting module.
