1 INTRODUCTION Visual display is an essential component of courtship, the success of which depends on both display quality and the surrounding environment, including visual background or threats by rival mates or predators. Therefore, some animals choose a particular display environment (Cole & Endler, 2016; Endler et al., 2022) or even modify it, as do bowerbirds, for example (Clifford & Dawn, 2004).
