With all the back and forth and doom and gloom going on around our southern border, I decided to make a list of five recommended reads from right here in Canada. All my choices are historical fiction, and they are all about Canadians doing Canadian things in a country that that we might not know enough about. I don’t know about you, but I learned painfully little about Canada when I was growing up.

Throughout our legal history, Canadian women have led the way in challenging and overturning discriminatory laws. In Women Who Woke up the Law: Inside the Cases that Changed Women's Rights in Canada (Second Story Press), author Karin Wells traces the stories of a number of women who fought for their rights in court—and won. Their grit and determination have changed Canadian law and paved the way for those who have followed.
