1 Introduction Gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies such as colorectal, pancreatic, hepatic, and biliary cancers impose an enormous healthcare burden, accounting for approximately 26% of all cancer diagnoses and 35% of cancer-related deaths [1, 2]. In the U.S., colorectal cancer alone is projected to affect more than 171,000 individuals and cause over 65 000 deaths by 2030, representing a leading cause of cancer mortality [3, 4].
