Columnist bids farewell
I remember feeling slightly intimidated at my first meeting with the staff at The Index. Here were all these lovely people who knew so much about journalism and what it takes to run a paper, and there was little old me, an English major who was passionate about sex education and wanted to write about it. My own writing topic was probably scary to some people. Yet, I made it through the meeting, met with my editor Erica and from there created my column.
“The Talk” with Ari: Sex and gender: differentiate and appreciate
Planned Parenthood describes biological sex as what was assigned to you at birth based on genitals or hormones. Assigned or biological sex typically, but not always, exists between male or female. In the case of intersex people, they are people whose reproductive or sexual anatomy does not fit into typical male or female definitions. Gender, on the other hand, goes beyond the sum on one’s parts.
“The Talk” with Ari: I tried it so you don’t have to: Dating apps
Welcome back, Truman community! While our break seemed short-lived, hopefully we each feel refreshed and rejuvenated for another semester. I want to share something I did over break that might be familiar — dating apps. Whether you have seen online commentary about them or sparked up a conversation yourself, dating apps have been commercialized and discussed over the last decade.
Bold Lifestyles: Truman professor publishes 14th book
Joe Benevento, a Truman State University creative writing professor, just came out with a new fiction book called “Kiss of the Moonflower.” It is the third installment of the Capelli Brothers series, but it can be read as a standalone novel if you have not read the other books in the series. “Kiss of the Moonflower” follows two brothers, Tony and Mike Capelli, as they venture to Missouri to find Tony’s love interest, Veronica, as Tony has lost contact with her during her sabbatical to Missouri.

“The Talk” with Ari: Sex toys: Toys for grownups
Sometimes we find ourselves stuck in a rut. When this happens, turning toward sex toys to spice things up in the bedroom, help you reach the big O or aid in gender affirmation can put you back into a good mood. There are a myriad of websites out there selling sex toys or giving out information on them. However, not all of the information is accurate and not all toys are safe.
SAB’s Harvest Festival captures fall spirit
It was a cool, brisk Autumn day as the sun gleamed down on Truman State University’s Quad Oct. 12 — ideal conditions for the Students Activities Board to hold its Harvest Festival, besides the lively winds that lifted up some of the tied down tablecloths. Luckily, an abundance of locally-grown pumpkins made perfect table-weights. These fall mainstays spanned across The Quad, ranging in size and frumpy appearance.
“The Talk” with Ari: Has COVID-19 put a stop to casual sex?
COVID-19 is still a threat, and we have to remain vigilant. The same is to be said when having casual consensual sex. Not only are condoms and contraceptives recommended, but taking COVID-19 precautions are highly recommended, as well. There are plenty of websites commentating and listing off protective measures you can take. Among them, Avert is a site devoted to HIV/AIDS and STI information that has recently posted about coronavirus safety.
“The Talk” with Ari: Contraceptives: let’s talk spermicide and Plan B
In my last column, I mentioned some of the more popular forms of birth control and ways to prevent STIs. This is a follow-up on the other birth control methods, emergency contraceptives and myths about contraception. So, let’s start with the next most effective method, almost as effective as the pill, the patch – Xulane. Similar to the other forms of contraception, the patch has hormones, estrogen and progesterone, embedded in it.
Contraceptives: Here’s to no STIs and no kids
This is the first installment of TMN staff writer Ari Klokic’s recurring sexual health advice column. Somewhere in the world today, someone is becoming a parent. While it may be a joyous occasion for them, I find that not many 20-something-year-olds want to be parents this early in life. Lucky for you, multiple birth control methods exist to protect against STIs or pregnancy.
