1 INTRODUCTION Influenza A viruses are pathogens of global concern in both human and veterinary medicine (Olson et al., 2014; Webster et al., 1992; Wiethoelter et al., 2015). Avian influenza virus (AIV) subtypes are generally classified into two groups based on their pathogenicity in domestic poultry: high-pathogenicity avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) and low-pathogenicity avian influenza viruses (LPAIVs).
