1 Introduction Colorectal cancer (CRC) has the 3rd highest incidence rate of cancer worldwide, and accounts for the 2nd highest cancer mortality rate (1). An estimated one in three cases of CRC occur in the lower bowel, or the rectum, the incidence of which are predicted to rise exponentially in the coming years (2).
