Introduction Microplastics (MPs) (<5 mm in size) were first reported in 1972 as an aquatic pollutant in marine environments, and now it has become a global concern for potential harmful effects not only on ecosystems but also on human health (Carpenter and Smith, 1972; Crew et al., 2020). Most of the MPs float on the ocean surface except high-density polymers, such as polyvinylchloride (PVC), polycarbonate (PC), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
