The identity of the plants being sold in these markets has conservational as well as medical implications. For example, rare or endangered species could inadvertently be collected if they are easily confused with their more abundant relatives. Likewise, increasing demands for medicinal products may lead to local over-harvesting extinction of otherwise non-threatened plant species.
