Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing for Artscope Magazine; dipping my toes into travel, music & art journalism all in one.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No but I like the idea of a machine used only for writing, forcing you to move lucidly from one topic to another.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I don't have a favorite fictional journalist but Hunter S Thompson is my favorite journalist and some of his pieces are just shy of fictional

What does it mean to be a journalist?

For me it's about following stories that interest me.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Adobe Creative Cloud, tascam portable recording device and Pages.

What's your favorite social network?

I used to be huge into Tumblr back when it was more popular, but I feel I've begrudgingly moved to Instagram and Tiktok to reach more people.

Who do you wish followed you?

Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Why did you become a journalist?

Reading mainstream music journalism was starting to make me incredibly sad.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No but I got published in a lot of lit mags back then.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Covering a TuNe-YaRdS record in 2018; some artists embed so much social context in their work that one could write in excess teasing it apart

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Give the truth and not sensationalism.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Beginning of the month.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

I was super excited to get pitched Art Contest, and also Boston Cream and other Boston noise - I love discovering new music through editors.

What's your favorite drink?

Unsurprisingly, it's coffee.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Nose in my notebook, in the studio, at a show, cooking up something good.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

There's a lot of parody publications that know what's up, like the Hard Times. But I love keeping up with writers on Bandcamp for music news.
