Slabs, the eye-catching and booming cars often seen cruising down Houston's highways with their signature chrome elbows sticking out wide, are as unique to Houston as the Astrodome or Buffalo Bayou. These vehicles were first popularized by Houston rappers in the 1980s, with their metallic candy paint, fully customized interiors and swangas — the elbows hanging off the rims — marking the basics of a common slab.
