What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a Features Writing Intern for GLAMOUR Magazine South Africa. One of my favourite publications I had worked for.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Nope, but I am intrigued by the idea of using a typewriter.
How is social media changing news?
It's introducing new ways of communicating and engaging with stories while dictating news trends and breaking stories faster.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Mikael Blomkvist from the Millennium series.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Fair, factual & honest reporting, knowing your audience, being open to criticism and finding the right time for fun & interesting moments.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#DumpTrump because it makes great use of a figure of speech while being a topical news trend.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I prefer being pitched via email & social media. We have been embracing social media platforms as a way of finding news stories and more.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Word. Google Docs. Grammarly. Trello. Discord. Twitter. Reddit. YouTube. Twitch. GoDaddy Studio (Over). My iPhone.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter. But I need more than 280 characters to express my thoughts eloquently.
Who do you wish followed you?
Damian Priest. I think he's a dreamboat.
Why did you become a journalist?
My high school English teacher took note of my potential writing capabilities. She encouraged me to pursue a career in writing.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No. We didn't have a newspaper and I was too busy with other teen-related problems at that time.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
As of now, anything relating to Genshin Impact or the RPG genre. It's in my wheelhouse.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Keep persevering and always bet on yourself.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Mid to late morning is likely the best time for pitches. I'll be too busy to respond to pitches sometime after 1 pm.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Receiving a pitch to work on a Glamour Magazine Fashion Flash feature on South African fashion designer, Errol Arendz.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Have yet to receive one. Don't jinx it!
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee, coffee, more coffee, the occasional water and red wine as a nightcap.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On my iPhone at least 85% of the time. Otherwise, either near some coffee or somewhere outdoors.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Digital Trends. They have some really good Apple-related content that I often read.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Women cannot find and achieve success in gaming and esports.
