Seeking Justice for Roey Weiser in U.S. Courts
On October 7, 2023, the world witnessed the brutal actions of Hamas terrorists as they carried out a horrific massacre, marauding across the border, seeking to kill, maim, rape, and destroy as many lives as possible in Israel. Among the fallen was Staff Sergeant Roey Weiser, a dual American Israeli citizen who paid the ultimate price while heroically saving twelve of his fellow soldiers.
'Israel Victory': A courageous, progressive, and pragmatic plan to end the conflict - review
More than a year before the Oct. 7 invasion and massacre, Daniel Pipes began work on his new book, Israel Victory: How Zionists Win Acceptance and Palestinians Get Liberated. Since Oct. 7, the word heard most from the lips of Israel’s highest political and military echelons is “victory.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has barely given a speech or issued a communiqué over the last nine months without mentioning the word.
Hope for the future: 40 young Jewish authors tackle key Jewish issues
Over the last few years, there has been a lot of talk about the so-called TikTok Generation, a generation of youth glued to social media, where meaning and purpose are shallow and cursory. However, an initiative of B’nai B’rith International Portugal, together with the International Observatory for Human Rights, demonstrates that there is a lot more to the Gen Zers than meets the eye.

Learning from the history of Portugal’s Jews
At the beginning of the 16th century, my family fled the Iberian Peninsula, which had been their home, according to family tradition, for the better part of two millennia, having been exiled directly from the Land of Israel. They appear to have left soon after the Lisbon Massacre of 1506, an antisemitic pogrom that killed thousands of Jews.
Israel is the only place we should want to be
It was a moment of unbridled and uncontrollable realization. My seven-year-old daughter’s body quivered and then shook as the tears began to flow. She understood that the 1,412 candles lit in front of her during a memorial ceremony at our local shopping center symbolized every person who had been murdered. She had accepted, if not entirely understood, that her beloved late cousin Roey Weiser, the “big brother” who liked to tease and play with her, would not be seen again.

The stories of MENA Jews are the stories of our people - opinion
It has been said that “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” The Jewish People have a very good reputation for memory and remembrance. Our annual ancient festivals revolve around past events and our recounting of them, and our modern days of commemoration speak to events that shaped the Jewish people over the last century.
Review of Let My People Know: The Incredible Story of Middle East Peace and What Lies Ahead
Let My People Know offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most eventful U.S. administrations for the Middle East in recent years by Lightstone, chief of staff to David Friedman, Donald Trump's ambassador to Israel. As Lightstone puts it, his intention is to "bring readers into the room" with him but without "damaging revelations about anyone." He clearly enjoyed his work and felt proud of his achievements, attributes that come abundantly through in the writing.

Celebrating the Portuguese nationality act for Sephardic Jews
(February 23, 2022 / JNS) March 1 will mark seven years since the enactment of the law that allows Jews of Sephardic origin to acquire Portuguese nationality. This important law sought to close a more than 500-year gap, prior to which and until the modern era, witnessed the last large, openly Jewish community allowed in Portugal; it ended as a result of mass forced conversions, harassment and violence.
Does Israel Still Have Values after Its Fourth Elections?
For many decades, Israeli politics was a battle royale of ideas between the Labor Party, led by David Ben-Gurion (left, at Jerusalem's King David Hotel in 1967) and his successors and the Herut/Likud Party led by Menachem Begin (right, Ezer Weizman is at center).
5 rules for winning an Israeli election - opinion
Israeli election campaigns are in some ways very similar to any campaign season around the world, and in other ways very different. The most marked way Israel is very different is in its political system, where it has a pretty extreme version of proportional representation.
Israel needs a museum about Middle Eastern Jewry
(JNS) The recent renovation projects involving Jewish synagogues and sites in Iraq, Morocco, Egypt, Lebanon and Afghanistan are interesting developments. On the whole, it is a positive move back towards recognition of these nations’ Jewish communities that were either wholly erased or significantly reduced during the last century’s exodus and expulsion of almost a million Jews from Arab and Muslim countries.

The Sephardi role in the development of Zionism
(May 8, 2019 / JNS) Far too many people unfortunately believe Zionism to be a movement created in the 19th century, largely in Europe, by purely secular Jews who rode the wave of nationalism spreading across the globe at that time. However, Zionism is not a modern concept, but rather an idea and a precept woven into our people’s history, forcefully emanating from all our major texts and testified to by daily and life-cycle events.
March 31st: Possibly the Darkest Date in Jewish History
Most Jews around the world are completely unaware of the significance of this date. However, on the 31st March 1492 the Alhambra Decree, the Edict of Expulsion from Spain, was signed by the joint Catholic Monarchs of Spain (Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon) ordering the expulsion of practicing Jews from the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and its territories and possessions by 31 July, of that year.

(photo credit: REUTERS) The recent “coming out” of freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been an eye-opening event. Ocasio-Cortez has courted much controversy by her understanding of the Israel-Palestinian conflict, which has led to unconscionable statements and not a few gaffes.

Pesach Signifies the Joining of the Jewish People - Ashkenazi and Sephardic
Email a copy of "Pesach Signifies the Joining of the Jewish People — Ashkenazi and Sephardic" to a friend JNS.org – Passover has been described as the “Independence Day of the Jewish People” — the day of our national liberation. Indeed, it is possible to describe the exodus from Egypt as the moment that Jewish peoplehood was founded.
Pesach signifies the joining of the Jewish people
Passover has been described as the “Independence Day of the Jewish People”—the day of our national liberation. It is possible to describe the exodus from Egypt as the moment Jewish peoplehood was founded. The fact that the holiday precedes Shavuot—the date of the giving of the law, our Torah—should tell us something about how our national identity comes even before our religious identity.
