Dean’s Medalist finds purpose in constitutional law and civic education
For Sophia Thomason, the study of civic and economic thought has always been about more than choosing a career path. It is about pursuing truth, understanding human nature and engaging deeply with the ideas that shape political life. Thomasen is graduating this spring with a Bachelor of Arts in civic and economic thought and leadership, along with a minor in art history and a certificate in philosophy, politics and economics.
Perimenopause Testing: Why It Matters
If you’re in your mid-40s or older and having symptoms like hot flashes, brain fog, weight gain, sleep issues and more, you might be wondering if a blood test can tell you whether you’re in perimenopause. It can’t— hormone levels fluctuate too widely during this transition for any single test to tell you where you are on your menopause journey.
From inquiry to impact: How the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership inspired Jack Silver
Dean’s Medalist Jack Silver graduates with dual degrees in business (law) and civic and economic thought and leadership. He discovered a genuine passion for the questions, texts and conversations at the heart of ASU's School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership. Drawn to SCETL’s emphasis on inquiry, leadership and understanding diverse perspectives, he found mentors and classmates who shaped his time at ASU.

An Integrated Module Performs Selective ‘Online’ Epoxidation in the Biosynthesis of the Antibiotic Mupirocin
Introduction Antibiotics that exhibit targeted efficacy are a powerful weapon in the fight against emergent bacterial resistance. Mupirocin, produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens NCIMB 10586, is a topical agent for Gram-positive bacteria with specific activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).1 Mupirocin exists as a mixture of pseudomonic acids (PAs) A-C, where the major component is PA-A (Figure 1).

Structure and Function of the α‐Hydroxylation Bimodule of the Mupirocin Polyketide Synthase
Introduction Polyketides are a structurally diverse class of natural products that have been exploited in the production of numerous high-value compounds including antibiotic, antifungal and anticancer therapeutics. Their basic assembly on large, multifunctional and multimodular polyketide synthases (PKSs) stems from a controlled series of Claisen condensations of malonyl-CoA that recursively extend the acyl carrier protein (ACP) bound polyketide thioester by two carbon atoms.

Programmed Iteration Controls the Assembly of the Nonanoic Acid Side Chain of the Antibiotic Mupirocin
Results and Discussion A significant feature of the mupirocin biosynthetic pathway is an apparent overabundance of enzymes exhibiting KS-like sequence homology that could represent different paths for how the fatty acid sidechain is assembled (Figure 2A).8 The modular KS within MmpB (MmpB_KS) and the type 1 mini module MmpF (745 aa) are two such KS type enzymes that have not been functionally characterised. Both contain a canonical β-ketoacyl synthase “KAS” I like catalytic triad (Cys-His-His).
UTIs and Estrogen: the Overlooked Link
It is common for patients with vulvas who are older than 50 years of age to present to the emergency department with symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs). They complain of urinary frequency, urinary urgency, pelvic pain, pain with urination, vaginal dryness, and constipation. Some have scary-looking urinalyses, and others never have positive cultures.

The molecular basis of protein toxin HicA-dependent binding of the protein antitoxin HicB to DNA
Toxin–antitoxin (TA) systems are present in many bacteria and play important roles in bacterial growth, physiology, and pathogenicity. Those that are best studied are the type II TA systems, in which both toxins and antitoxins are proteins. The HicAB system is one of the prototypic TA systems, found in many bacterial species.

Urologist Helps Men Make (Not-So) Hard Choices in 'NY Med' Premiere
When I agreed to participate in the documentary series "NY Med," I made the resolution that I would be my honest self. I figured the world didn't need another medical hero, but rather to see a decent, analytic, and somewhat goofy person behind that prototypical authoritarian visage we often have of our health care professionals. I cruised into my clinic at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center on the first day of filming.
