Abstract Spatial thinking, in general, and mental rotation, in particular, have seen sustained research attention due to such abilities playing a critical role in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning. The recent development of sensor-based approaches to identify, understand, and measure cognition and affect opens up new possibilities to study such topics.

INTRODUCTION Recent studies show that STEM+C (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Computing) open-ended learning environments enhance conceptual understanding and practice (eg, Hutchins, Biswas, Maróti, et al., 2020). These environments promote the synergistic learning of science and computing concepts by engaging students in contextualized, problem-based learning (Astuti et al., 2021; Grover & Pea, 2013).
