The Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) maintains a comprehensive and continuously evolving modelling infrastructure that forms the foundation of evidence-based economic analysis. This infrastructure encompasses a broad spectrum of quantitative approaches – from macroeconomic forecasting and general equilibrium trade models to dynamic microsimulation platforms, input-output models and agent-based systems – each designed to address specific dimensions of economic policy.

This paper introduces a framework that integrates Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QUAIDS) elasticities with the ADB Multi-Region Input-Output (MRIO) database to evaluate the direct and indirect impacts of tariffs on Value Added at the country-sector level. Using the data on USA tariffs imposed in September 2025, results reveal a broad-based contraction in global value added by –0.52 percent, with indirect effects roughly twice as large as direct ones.

Gingerbread, vanilla crescents, butter cookies, cinnamon stars, and Linzer Augen – WIFO economist Asjad Naqvi has used Eurostat data to determine the price increases for individual ingredients and ingredient groups and weighted them for the recipes. A visualisation shows how prices for selected varieties have changed over time. With the inflation calculator from WIFO and Standard, the ingredients can also be weighted differently.
