Metabolic theories for the origin of life postulate that precursors to metabolic pathways initiated without enzymes, with some products of these reaction networks acting as catalysts to reinforce existing reactions or enable new ones. (1) Products of the reaction network are proposed to catalyze their own or each other’s formation, resulting in the complex web of intertwined catalytic processes found at the heart of biology.
