1. Introduction In the early 1900s, William B. Coley, an orthopedic surgeon, administered bacterial mixtures, including Streptococcus pyogenes and Serratia marcescens, to his sarcoma patients with the goal of triggering a systemic immune response that would possibly help treat the tumor [1]. The administration of “Coley’s toxins” proved to be successful over the course of his career [2].
