2025 Women’s Prize for non-fiction shortlist
The Women’s Prize for non-fiction recently announced its 2025 shortlist. Covering a broad sweep of disciplines – from history, science and nature, to current affairs and memoir – the six books are united by the power of hope and the necessity of resistance to initiate change. In different ways, this shortlist exemplifies the irrepressible spirit of humanity and nature, and the capacity of both to reinvent in the face of adversity.
Anolik: Whiz journalist roars in a whisper
LILI ANOLIK's Didion & Babitz has been in my thoughts like a guilty conscience. All the wrong reasons are why I've read it. Didion's name would have been cause enough for journalists wishing to pursue their own kind of creative writing in the wake of New Journalism. But Neelsie has a greater admiration for Didion's husband, John Gregory Dunne, whose True Confessions is one of my all-time favourites. Not cool to admit it, but there you have it.

A dive into the misinformation cesspool: Marianna Spring's debut book
“Disinformation Correspondent” is surely a top contender in the Orwellian job title stakes. The BBC’s Marianna Spring has “and Social Media” tagged on, but that’s not her focus. Social media, as she explains in this disturbing book, is just the vehicle for spreading unfounded scare stories, half-baked pseudoscience, racist bigotry and unadulterated hate.

Double-sided mirror
Franz Boas, her opening subject, is often characterised as the “Father of American Anthropology” and his 1883 stint in the Canadian Arctic with Inuit people is considered the first real anthropological fieldwork. Proud and ambitious, he had studied physics, philosophy and geography — his thesis was on colour perception — and fought duels with several students who insulted him. As a German Jew, Boas’s prospects of academic appointment in his own country were limited.
Double-sided mirror • Martha Macintyre
Anthropology’s association with colonialism has generated debate, guilt, self-justification and intellectual crises within the discipline for decades. Critics of have emphasised how colonial interests facilitated and perhaps directed research. During a crucial period, though, from the 1880s to the 1930s, imperialism was foundering while the study of its subjects flourished.
Bruegel had a Worldview
Given the paucity of current political debate, the notion of holding a worldview seems quaint. The self-serving dominate, as mindsets close. It’s a parlous situation, particularly when most of our crises, climatic or military, demand the opposite. Luckily, we can turn to the past for guidance, including to the philosopher Immanuel Kant, who came up with the idea of a worldview. In his 1790 Critique of Judgment, he called it Weltanschauung.
