They made it! Sodebo crossed the finish line on Sunday morning, beating the Jules Verne Trophy circumnavigation record by almost 13 hours with a final time of 40 days, 10 hours, 45 minutes and 40 seconds. The record had stood since 2017, when Francis Joyon sailed nonstop around the world in 40 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds. In December, Thomas Coville and six crew set off aboard the 100-ft trimaran Sodebo to attempt to break this already amazingly fast nine-year-old record.
A Transatlantic Trip Teeming With Life
We sailed onto the hook in Sainte Anne Bay — off the windward island of Martinique in the southern Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles — exactly 21 days, 6 hours, and 18 minutes after leaving Ilha Brava in the Cabo Verde chain last year. The sail, of course, was spectacular! We had lost our upper spinnaker halyard block about a week before we set off, so the voyage was mostly under mainsail only as far downwind as she would go.

ARC Rally - Rescue at Sea
It was 3:17 a.m. when urgent pounding on my cabin door awoke me. “Mayday! Mayday! We have two. A man overboard and a boat’s taking on water!” My bucket-list adventure of sailing across the Atlantic had started eight days earlier, on November 24, 2024. I and the ill-fated were among the hundreds of enthusiasts on the 140 boats that started the 38th running of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC), which is organized by the U.K.-based World Cruising Club.

We imagine everyone has seen photos and footage of the carnage left in the wake of hurricanes Milton and Helene; we won’t add to that media storm.

This has led to speculation that the whales are teaching each other how to do this and that perhaps it’s retribution for our intrusion on the sea, or possibly just games. In this latest incident, as with all mischievous acts, the perpetrators attempt a getaway to avoid the limelight.
