A big, beautiful blue night
A Democrat was elected to the Senate in Kansas for the first time in 92 years. A progressive and the first Muslim senator was elected in a state that Trump won twice. James Talarico prevailed in ruby-red Texas, becoming the state’s first Democratic senator in decades. Here in Lexington, Zach Dembo flipped the seat that once belonged to Andy Barr, defeating the Trump-endorsed Ralph Alvarado.
Why I can’t stop listening to Phoebe Bridgers
Six months ago, no one had seen her in public for more than a year. It had been almost six years since she released a solo album. Now she’s playing sold-out arena shows. If Phoebe Bridgers has made one thing abundantly clear, it is that she is not afraid to disappear. Years away from the spotlight had many fans, including myself, afraid that our indie darling had disappeared forever.
You’re missing the point of ‘Primetime.’
Categories: October 20, 2026 Picture this: It’s the official release day for “Primetime.” You crowd into your good friend’s Subaru with a few other friends and head to Cinemark. You all grab some popcorn, a crisp fountain drink and recline in the heated seats. You watch Robert Pattinson give one of the best performances of his career. As soon as you exit the theater, you open Letterboxd. Five stars. That is exactly the evening I had on Sept. 25.
Cornell offered an essay. I don’t absolve.
Jane Doe is taught to cover her drink, never walk home alone or wear anything revealing. If something happens to her, it must be because she broke one of these cardinal rules of womanhood, right? Confronting the truth that it is John Doe’s fault, not Jane’s, is apparently inconceivable. An even more uncomfortable truth is that John Doe could walk on your campus, sit in your class or even be someone you consider a friend.
Trump’s media ban hurts you too
Putting banners of his own face on government buildings, adding his signature to paper currency, producing passports with his portrait, banning critical media outlets and replacing the press pool with content approved by the state sounds like behavior more akin to a dictator than a sitting U.S. president. Nevertheless, President Trump recently launched “Trump TV” after he announced on Sept. 18 that he was banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House.
Everything you think you know about Appalachia is wrong
Almost every portrayal that I have seen of Appalachia paints it as a region full of poor, uneducated and backward people in need of saving. I had my first reckoning with this when I was a small child. A movie was being filmed in town, and everyone was bustling with excitement. The production was looking for extras, and my mother signed up. I remember sitting at my kitchen table when she got home, and it looked like she had dirt on her face.
The 90 is cooking (literally)
Last year, I wrote a glowing review about The 90. In the piece, I encouraged my peers to give the establishment a chance. Now, the establishment has formally rebranded from the Fresh Food Company to the Social House. To be honest, I expected to hate this rebrand. I thought that there was no chance that UK could pull off completely changing its dining experience within a single summer.
Is your dorm touse?
Every student who has had the pleasure (or misfortune) of living on campus at UK probably has a distinct memory of the first time they set foot in their dorm. Maybe you were impressed that you had your own room with a nice mattress, or perhaps you were doomed to a tri-it or a shared room with a twin-xl bed. Either way, the experiences that you have had in the residence halls at UK have probably shaped your opinion of on-campus housing.
VIDEO: Rising cost of tuition financially strains students
Categories: September 8, 2026 Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed in this video are those of the authors and do not reflect the policy or position of the Kernel. The 2026-27 school year will see the highest budget and the most expensive tuition yet for the University of Kentucky. What feels like every year, thousands of students at UK open their inboxes to yet another email from the Office of the President, informing them that students will see a tuition increase.
OPINION: Rising cost of tuition financially strains students
Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the authors and do not reflect the policy or position of the Kernel. The 2026-27 school year will see the highest budget and the most expensive tuition yet for the University of Kentucky. As the cost of living crisis unsparingly burdens millions, many students feel unequipped to face skyrocketing prices while paying for school.
I will always love Dolly Parton
Yes, you can play guitar with pink acrylic nails, honor your community and faith, stand up for the disadvantaged, tease your hair higher than the mountains that raised you, build an empire of more than thirty businesses, escape poverty, inspire an entire generation of artists, have a big personality and a big heart. Why? Because Dolly Parton showed us that anything is possible if you dare to dream. Dolly’s success was not despite her humble beginnings, but because of them.
Olivia Rodrigo is not just a pop star; she’s a storyteller
“You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love” is more than just another pop album; it chronicles an entire romance from first date to heartbreak. Every girl who has found herself in love can see at least a small reflection of herself in this album. Rodrigo masterfully paints the rawness of her relationship, sparing no shade of blue even in her love songs. As the album progresses, doubt seeps into the cracks of her relationship until there is nothing left to salvage.
What’s next for Iran?
No country can overthrow foreign governments quite as decisively as the United States. From Afghanistan to Venezuela and now Iran, the U.S. has a long history of toppling authoritarian regimes. After more than 100 years of quests to spread democracy and liberate people from brutal dictators, one could assume that the U.S. has perfected the art of nation-building, right? Wrong.
Former chief justice and district judge share career insight at UK
University of Kentucky students heard from former Supreme Court Chief Justice Stephen G. Breyer and his brother, U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer, in a conversation about their upbringing and respective careers. The event took place on Monday, April 13, at the Otis A. Singletary Center for the Arts, and was moderated by James Duff, interim dean of the J. David Rosenberg College of Law. Stephen was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1994 by President Bill Clinton.
Trump’s brazen rally in Kentucky was the most bizarre spectacle I have ever experienced
I witnessed Donald Trump give, truly, the most brazen and bizarre speech I have ever heard. Between a rant about windmills killing birds, an appearance by influencer and boxer Jake Paul, tales of our armed forces taking an “excursion” to Iran, and insults to a range of figures from Barack Obama to Kamala Harris, and even Republicans Rand Paul and Thomas Massie, President Trump’s speech felt impulsive and unscripted. In the middle of his speech, he even begged his team to turn off the teleprompter.
Everything is controversial when you’re a woman
A woman is expected to do it all. Succeed professionally, adhere to societal beauty standards and start a family, all while maintaining a smile on her face. If a woman is career-oriented, she will often be labeled as bossy or controlling. If a man is focused on his career, he is considered to be ambitious and determined. If a woman gets married young, becomes a mother and a homemaker, she will never have success of her own. If a young man is married and starts a family, he is simply traditional.
Trump’s State of the Union address chose confrontation over unity
Feb. 24, 2025, President Donald Trump stood before a house divided for the first State of the Union Address of his second term. This division is reflective of rampant polarization throughout the country, with six in ten Americans reporting that the country is in a worse place now than it was a year ago. Instead of trying to bridge divides, Trump only deepened them in one of the most intense speeches of his second term.
University of Kentucky does not care as much about you after freshman year
Each year, the University of Kentucky sells thousands of hopeful high school seniors a shiny future, spacious dorms, generous scholarships and the chance to attend a SEC school. However, this deal, comes with quite a bit of deception. Freshman arrive on campus in August for a glorious K-Week filled with free merchandise, food and new experiences. For the next two or so weeks, they settle into their dorms, become acquainted with their new community, and attend their first classes of the semester.
2026 Grammy picks and predictions
It’s Grammy season! With that, it is time to celebrate the world’s best musical sensations in the past year. Since the first Grammy Awards in 1959, the event has traditionally occurred annually in the U.S., with hundreds of artists seeking recognition for their cultural impact and talent. Everyone knows that being awarded a Grammy is a massive honor, especially for rising artists.
One year in: Assessing the economic impact of Trump’s tariff policies
It has been a year since Donald Trump and the Republican Party took back the White House in a vicious campaign which promised to address inflation, lower the price of eggs and gas, and make things more affordable overall. Instead, the word “tariff” has almost become synonymous with the economic policy of the Trump administration. Just hours after President Trump was sworn in for the second time, he announced tariffs against Canada and Mexico.
The 90 is an underrated gem
Imagine, it is a mundane Tuesday afternoon, you are absolutely starving and there is no food in your dorm. Luckily, you live in Lewis Hall, which is right outside of The 90. Perfect, right? Wrong. Your friend calls you and asks you to go to The 90 with them and you roll your eyes in disgust. You would rather starve than eat there. This is the unfortunate reality for many University of Kentucky students. To most, braving the Fresh Food Company is a nightmare inducing activity.
The New York City mayoral election reflects the future of the Democratic Party
In an age when politicians are commodities to be bought and sold, Zohran Mamdani has done the unthinkable. He beat mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo, an establishment, pac-funded, moderate Democrat, by running his own grassroots campaign for mayor of New York City. His coalition did not consist of billionaires and corporations, it consisted of working class New Yorkers, immigrants and young people.
