Housing inventory is at its highest point all year
Jaison R. Abel, Richard Deitz, Dan Garcia, and Ben Hyman The enormous increase in remote work that occurred during the pandemic was a response to a temporary public health crisis. Now that the pandemic has passed, just how much remote work will persist and how much are businesses comfortable with?
Overuse of social media and devices top parent concerns as kids head back to school
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - As children head back to school, two issues have climbed higher on their parents' list of concerns: the role of social media and the internet in kids' lives. Over half of parents also rate mental health issues as leading health concerns for children and teens, according to the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health.
America's Biggest Firms' Moat Is Becoming Impregnable
Authored by Simon White, Bloomberg macro strategist, The huge outperformance in the stocks of the largest US firms will become further entrenched as they outspend on capex and buybacks, while smaller companies defensively build up cash levels. Big is beautiful. That's been the resounding lesson from stock markets over the years. The biggest stocks have not only outperformed the rest, they have made their performance look like a rounding error.
How inventory inches up with higher interest rates
Even as mortgage rates climbed over 7% in the past six weeks, home prices have not declined. But, we can see slightly fewer purchases happening. As demand dips, the prices are not. As a result, the available inventory of homes for sale is slightly higher each week. Not a lot higher, but inching up. Mortgage rates are sitting at their highest levels in many years. Earlier this year, it looked like rates might ease back down a bit, but for a month and a half, they've bounced up.
Commercial furniture and equipment procurement platform Source snags $8.5M
Today I'm going to focus on home prices around the country. How much will home prices climb over the next year? All year, the strength of home-buyer demand and the tight supply of homes for sale has meant that the market pretty rapidly found a floor on the home price correction of 2022. Even as mortgage rates rose, and affordability was pushed out of reach for many potential home buyers, there are still sufficient buyers who can afford these prices and these rates.
While resolving a key asthma challenge, Hamilton researchers also create a new method to detect proteins in body fluids and other materials
- by New Deal democrat As usual, the month's data started out with the ISM manufacturing report for last month, and construction spending for the month before last. Additionally, I am going to take a look at motor vehicle production, because I think it is unusually important right now. Manufacturing contracted for about the 10th month in a row in July, while the more leading new orders component has now contracted for more than a year.
A soft landing for the real estate market. What's next?
The venture capital sector has been in a sustained downturn for almost eighteen months. How does this downturn end? Well, it may have already ended, but let's see about that. We will know for sure in a few quarters. The NASDAQ peaked at roughly 16,000 in November 2021. By June 2022, it was down 33%. It stayed down for all of 2022 and ended the year at roughly 10,500. But this year the NASDAQ is up almost 40%. What is driving this? If I had to pick one thing, I would say inflation and interest rates.
The End of an Era for Stocks, Warns the Fed
About this time last summer, I said it looked like the U.S. housing market could have a soft landing in 2023. Any time you use the phrase "soft landing" it should come with a trigger warning because some folks get really angry hearing it. But, I think it's pretty indisputable now that we got a soft landing. The market was roaring - way too hot - with bidding wars, speculators and investors who thought they couldn't lose.
Unemployment Insurance Claims, Layoffs, Recession
Initial claims hit expectations, while continuing claims surprise on upside (1710K vs 1686K consensus). I was recently asked - in light of these numbers - what the high profile layoff announcements meant for the economy, now and going forward. My answers - not much in terms of the short term horizon, and secondly, expect more layoffs as the economy slows further. Here's my reasoning.
Slow Pace Of Balance Sheet Reduction Calls Into Question Fed's Commitment To Inflation Fight
Via SchiffGold.com, Most people have focused on Federal Reserve interest rate cuts as it battles price inflation. But there is another element in the inflation fight most people ignore - balance sheet reduction. It isn't going well.

Royal Caribbean Plans Late Christmas Gift for Some Passengers
The cruise line had an epic comeback from the pandemic and it plans to reward loyal customers. Loyalty drives the cruise business. Every cruise line has a program that both rewards loyal members and provides ways for them to connect. They include special perks like captain's receptions, loyalty lounges, special sailings, welcome gifts, and onboard discounts. Every cruise line does it a little differently, but the goal is to lock in customers so they sail on the same cruise line each time.

The single-family rental (SFR) category is providing a critical pathway to home ownership
One of the most common misconceptions in the broader discussion of America's housing crisis is that the rapid increase of the single-family rental (SFR) market is preventing prospective homeowners - especially younger homeowners - from attaining the American Dream. That is not the case, in fact, SFR properties serve as a critical housing "safety valve," providing an intermediate step toward home ownership.

Realtor.com Reports Weekly Active Inventory Up 29% Year-over-year; New Listings Down 10%
If yesterday markets made little sense, when the dollar and yields slumped yet stocks and other risk assets tumbled alongside them in a puzzling reversal of traditional risk relationships (a move which was likely precipitated by the plunge in AAPL and KMX), today things are a bit more logical with the dollar initially extending its slide helping futures rise to session highs just below 3,700, before the dollar surged just after 5am as sterling tumbled after Bloomberg reported that Prime...

AJ Barkley to speak at HW Annual Oct. 3-5
I was talking with a friend last week about the markets and the economy and she said she didn't understand why the market went up after the GDP report. After all, it was the second quarter in a row of GDP contraction and that's a recession. Shouldn't I be selling stocks? I explained that markets are forward looking and that stocks bottom well before the end of a recession (about 4 months on average).
